Amateur (HAM) Radio

Here are a couple pics of my radios and antennas in my TV. I have talked to to many places from my truck, some of the furthest from the truck include Belgium and Argentina from south Louisiana. Then of course to the DW behind the TT!

I tow our camper to live in while working out of state. I use a CB while I'm on the road to listen to road conditions from the truck drivers. It's a hand held unit with a magnetic antenna. When I get home, I call my husband's cell phone using a bluetooth so that my hands are free. He gives me the directions I need, plus some I don't, without having to hold something to communicate.

Regarding the unreliability of cell phones in some areas: we just got a vehicle with OnStar, and the dealer said the telephone function will often work in areas that do not have cell service. Does anyone know if this is correct? We actually were assigned our own OnStar phone number, so we can send or receive calls on it.

Attached is a link that describes how On-Star works very simply. Fact is, that On-Star is reliant on Cell Service. I figure that it may use the 2 common technologies used in cell service. So no matter which provider is in range, On Star may be able to use it. If there is no cell service, no calls automated or manual.
