Checklists #1

Hello all,

Being a new TT owner, I am building a series of checklists to help ensure that we have everything done properly.

Although there are many that probably don't feel that checklists are necessary, I feel that having a complete checklist will allow people to focus when it really is critical such as having to pull the trailer out of a campsite in a hurry.

This is the first of my lists that I am hoping the community will help me refine to be a good series of lists that can be shared by everyone.

Please remember that I have never had a trailer before so be gentle on your criticisms of my first drafts.

Prior to departure - Outside

1. Hook up trailer to truck
2. Setup WDHS

1. Check slide clear of debris
2. Water hose properly stored
3. Power line properly stored
4. All stabilizers raised
5. All blocks stored
6. Carpet stored
7. Furniture stored
8. Camp stove stored
9. Sweep camping area for other items and debris
10. Slide fully retracted
11. Check trailer lights
12. All skylights closed
13. Roof properly rdy for travel
14. Ensure doors securely shut
15. Ensure hatches shut and locked

I will add... some duplications with your second list...

Prior to departure - Outside

1. Hook up trailer to truck
2. Setup WDHS
3. make sure chains are hooked up
4. make sure electric trailer plug is in
5. make sure electric lift is all the way up
6. take out wheel chocks, leveling boards and stow away, might require a slight move of trailer
7. make sure RV steps are up
8. make sure RV TV antenna is down
9. check lights at rear of trailer
10. walk campsite one more time to make sure you got it all packed up or thrown away

I got this on the trailer tongue in black label tape with white letters.

I had a look and I didn't see any lists like what I am envisioning. When it is finished I will share it on the site.

There has been some discussion that the WHDS should be done once the entire unit is pulled out to a level site.

I thought someone had put something there. Oh, well.

Look at app called RV Checklist. Has saved us many times. Can be customized. Those who think they couldn't possibly forget anything are fooling themselves.

A few additions and two moves.

add:
Insure electric WH switch off incase you plug in at home to clean or unpack
Drain all or some of FW tank if used unless you need water at next location
Make sure antenna is down if you have one that raises and lowers
put campfire completely out

Move #'s 1 & 2 down past checking slides, jacks, electric & water connections.

Smile Checklists save us!!

We started with a checklist for our Aliner and modified it for the Coachmen 192RBS. Honestly, I don't know how anyone could own and pull a travel trailer successfully without using a checklist. It has saved us many times for sure!!!
For a few pieces of paper, I can let my mind focus on other things and know that I will most likely travel without damaging my truck or trailer.

Checklists are very helpful. As routine became habit my checklists were modified.

We have an extensive check list . Got a couple of blocks from home and I said do you have the check list? Nope. Now I guess we need a check list to remember our check list ... getting old.

Are there two of you? If so, one of you should prep the inside, the other the outside unless any activity requires both of you. Once you each think you are done exchange checklists and double check that each item is completed.
Also, try to avoid distractions while walking through your setup or breakdown routines. It is too easy to overlook a step when your neighbors walk up to say howdy or goodbye.

We have developed a routine that we are still improving... for example when DW brings in the slide I know she is done in the trailer and I can lift the stabilizers etc.
