Question Computer Question at Border

Have you or any of your travelling friends ever been asked if travelling w/ a computer when crossing into the US or Canada? I'm over to the States @ least twice a year & have never been asked.

Crossed into US last year in NB and the border guard was more interested in looking at the layout of the 5er but no questions about computers.

No - only when flying, at Security you need to turn it on.

at border crossing returning to canada yes. buddy and I were down to chicago and both took our laptops. customs checked it on the way back. while we were down there another buddy of ours gave us his collection of wallpapers. needless to say customs took their time as they went through the same 16000 images on both computers lol.

EDIT: that was also the Port of North Portal, SK. one of the most famous ports for people trying to smuggle child porn and graphic novels depicting underage minors in them. They also have the highest bust ratio i hear! (means they do a better job lol)

Living on the border and crossing consistently at both Buffalo and Detroit and I have never had that question. I carry a laptop and an Ipad and have never been asked about my computers.

We just came back and we not asked, they were more interested if we had any American artillary (fireworks) and red meat than anything else. Spent abt 20 minutes shooting the breeze about high school in moose jaw. We came across West Poplar in Sk.

Cross many times a year and never asked.

More hassel entering the US than returning.

There actually is an issue with moving computers from one country to another. The border guards aren't usually the ones who care. It's more a technology race type of thing. Instead of me misquoting, here's a link to get you started Export Control Basics (Exporting 101)

In the BC Kootenays it is getting to be a PITA getting back into Canada, especially at the Nelway Crossing. Certain guards would rather hassle Canadians than visiting Americans.
