It all depends on your personalities. No one can answer this for you. All they can do is give you food for thought. When we built our house, we sold the old one and moved into a sublet apartment for three months while we built our garage. We then moved into the garage (detached, three bays with bath, kitchen, and bonus room, which we used for our bedroom). Then, two years later we moved into the home we built. Worked seemlessly! When we moved into the house we took out the stove in the garage and my husband uses all those cabinets for his workshop. Good luck getting it all figured out!

Moved out of my house in Iowa last April and into my 5er until the end of JUNE. Then move the 5'er to Northwest Arkansas and have been in it ever since. I'm loving it! It also helps to be set up in a great trailerhood!

Isn't there a window of time during which you have to roll your equity over into a new residence, or otherwise pay taxes on it as income?

There is, I believe it falls under the capitol gains taxes. Basically, you sell your house, the equity gained over investment (You paid $100,000, sell for $200,00, that $100,000 growth is taxable. Not what you pay in, but what it grows.) is taxable like income. But, if you reinvest in another piece of property (This I have no clue on except if you buy another bit of land or a house then that qualifies.) then you're exempt from paying taxes on it. The catch, eventually that property will be sold and cashed out, whomever does that get to pay up, depending on the actual situation and all.

I am no tax expert but I think your exempted if married up to $500,000 and $250,000 if single on capital gains tax... It may depend on where you live too....

I'm not too worried about capital gains and taxes on this property. If I break even I will be pleased. The real estate market has seen so many ups and downs that the ride has been worse than any roller coaster I have ever been on.
Anyone interested in a nice little place on 3 acres? Three bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths, 4 car garage, energy efficient, around 5K sq ft?
Texas snow fall optional of course,

Capitol Gaines Tax is based on location. In that if you move so far from that residence it doesn't apply. That being said you really need a layer in that area to BE SURE!

We would be moving almost 3 miles down the same road. Texas has no state income tax. And as mentioned I don't see any gains to be concerned with.

I believe Capital Gains is also influenced by age. At some age, maybe 50, a couple can gain up to $500,000. And not pay taxes or reinvest the money. That is a federal tax law...or was until 6 years ago when the DW and I went through that process.

Campground Hosts do it all the time. It's better if you can move once in a while, but not impossible. Pick up some hobbies and enjoy outdoors. For me, I would stay away from urban RV parks, find a convenient State park, get out enjoy, tour adjacent local culture, cook in outside Dutch Ovens (keeps smells out). And have fun. The only thing we cook in our RV is morning coffee, and we eat fantastic. Don't be afraid.
