Wow! Hopefully no one was hurt! As far as covering the genny, personal preference I suppose, I have never covered mine and it has 800+ hrs on it and has been dumped on quite a few times.

Golf umbrella, zip ties, imagination, and you have the perfect generator cover.

I’ve been wondering how to cover mine for deer season. Think I’m going to build a tent using pvc for the structure. Easy to store and strong enough when assembled. Easy to stake down.

If I expect rain or snow, I put my generator under the tailgate of my truck to afford some protection. My concern for using a box is that it may be too enclosed and not keep the generator cool enough while lightweight materials may be hard to secure from strong winds. RV generators have a rather sizeable fan to remove heat and an exhaust system to carry away the exhaust. Replicating that in a portable generator is not an easy task.

We discussed this a week or so ago... here...
Consumer Reports On Generators
Hope you get things sorted out soon.
Hopefully that generator isn't too loud for campground use.
It doesn't appear to be an inverter type.

I originally purchased the tent to fit over a Duromax 3500 open frame gen. It's the XL size and provided plenty of cover as well as easy access. Can't fiqure out how to rotate image, sorry.

I put a canvas tarp over a rope strung between two trees. then I anchor the corners with rope and tent stakes. The center rope is about 4-6 feet high and my current tarp is 6x8 feet. Works well in rain or snow. You might need good anchors in high winds like yours. lol

Running in the Rain
I've run our Honda 2000 in the rain, wind, sand storms. It is like a Timex, "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking". What finally killed the one on our houseboat was someone lighting it on fire by overfilling and starting it before the gas evaporated. No, it wasn't me, or anyone I know. We share our houseboat with a few losers.

I bought a generator box and mounted it in the bed of my truck. It has panels that can be removed so it can run while in the box which actually protects it quite well from the elements as well as thieves. Purchased from this company https://kshmarine.com/custom-generator-boxes/
