My 7.3 has only 133k on it and has towed 90% of its life since 2001. This is the heaviest trailer it has towed. I checked the fuel press. It's at 58# but drops off to 40# under this load so that's why I'm thinking the sending unit strainer are stopped up or a weak fuel pump.

Your 7.3 should IMO pull the trailer with ease, if you pressure is dropping off like that then a little maintenance is due.

Air fuel mix could be off or a weak injector, does it blow black much?

No black smoke. I did replace a couple injectors awhile back.

2014 GMC Duramax with 7400 miles. It got 11.5 mpg pulling a 12,000lb 38' 5er round trip to Goshen @ 65-70 mph. Open road empty it gets 20+mpg.

Under. 65k! We get 11.8 pulling a 34 ft aviator! Diesel is more expensive and you have to put Def in about 2000 miles hauling your trailer. Def is 7.50 a gallon in store or at the truckers pumps about 2.39 a gallon. But our diesel pulls the camper very easily! We have a F250 power stroke and love it.

Why when the Diesel engines are brought up do folks tout how long they last as reason to justify the expense?

Doesn't the rest if the truck wear out the same as a gas truck? Body mounts, suspension mounts, ball joints, wires chaffing, padding in the seats?

So if the fuel costs more offsetting and mileage gains, everything wears out the same as a gasser, are you really getting enough torque that gearing can't equalize to justify twice the price?

I have a '12 2500 HD Duramax pulling a 28 ft Tracer. I get between 11 and 11.5 MPG. I tend to travel 60 to 70 MPH. I know I can get better milage going slower but it pulls at around 1600 and so easy I forget it's back there.

I have 25,000 on my 2012 f350 and it's been trouble free to date although it is still too early to tell. I agree that purchasing year end and middle of the road in terms of trim levels will save you some scratch. My 16 year old son had a low mileage 7.3 gift from heaven fall in his lap last year. Actually his grandfather handed it down to him. The truck runs and looks showroom new with only 50k miles on it. He has already been instructed that he can never sell that truck and it must stay in the family!

Good advice. Learn the truck and he will love the truck.
