My 2001 Duramax was replaced at about 175k miles with a 2009 Dmax that now has 85k miles on it. I tow about 10k miles a year -- sometimes more, never less.

The 2001 got about 1-2 mpg better fuel economy (empty and towing), but the six speed Allison is a wonderful thing to have when pulling a medium sized fiver. For mere mortals towing legal loads, I can't see a need to add a tuner to any of the recent model year diesels.
