Dash Cam Recommendations?

Coming back from a trip a couple of weeks ago we had a clueless driver jump into the fast lane in front of us (yes, I was doing 67 and passing a slower vehicle) and almost instantly hit their brakes to make an illegal U-Turn in the interstate median! Needless to say, it was all I could do to get the rig stopped behind them and avoid getting rear-ended at the same time!

So, DW and I think a dash cam may be a smart idea. I've done some research and am leaning towards a KDSLink X1.

Thankfully you and your family are alright!

Your model looks better than the Mobius I have, but the $80 and the size make it interesting.

I have a Mobius camera that I have used as a dash cam and as a helmet cam.

Mobius ActionCam 1080p Mini HD Camera - Motion RC

It has a "power on record" features that starts recording when it gets power and shuts down 1 minutes after loosing power (runs off of a USB port in your vehicle). Another key features is continues recording (it will record 3 minute sections and overwrite the oldest when the memory card is full). That way you only need to look at the videos of something "interesting" occurs.

I'm very happy with the Garmin Dashcam 20. It's small, has excellent resolution and is easy to operate.....

I started with a dash cam DVR for the same reason but got to thinking it did nothing for side or rear. Last year I upgraded to an integrated 4 channel DVR, I now record a 360 degree view around my coach while driving and can also use it for security in a campground. There are a lot more options available since I installed mine. I can record 64 hours on a sim card before it copies over the first file. Everything from eBay. Search on description in my parts list.

I've had a dash cam for the last 4 years. The one I have now records front and rear with a 32 gig SD card. Not only does it record idiots but other VERY interesting, Youtube quality stuff as well. It comes on before the truck goes in gear. You never know.

I've been using the Roadhawk dash cams for several years now. Bought them from the UK and never had a single problem with them. I have the original RH-1 in one vehicle and the RH-2 in the other. The RH-s simultaneously records what is happening inside the vehicle as well as outside.

All Roadhawk cameras work alongside google maps and gps plotting to provide a mapped route when played back through your computer. The cameras record audio and any impact or shocks experienced by the vehicle as well as speed and direction. Simple to install and like I said, extremely reliable. If you order it through the UK distributors there is no tax.

I bought a Pilot cam, small and cost $40 . Records video and sound and has a 4GB card.Video looping auto on off.120 Degree viewing. Not the best but it serves the purpose. Later RJD

Walmart - X 2 already saved me a hassle when some lady pulled out in front of me and almost had me looking through her glove compartment.

I'm picking one of these up when they go on sale tomorrow. 1080P with GPS, reviews are average but the price point is good.

I did check on several sites and the reviews ran from poor to average. I'm hoping they have made improvements in it. I seen it in the Costco ad for 79.95 starting tomorrow, it's 139.00 plus on Amazon and 149.95 at Target. Guess I'll take a chance and give it a try.

As I previously stated, RoadHawk cameras are the best. I've been using my cameras daily since buying them several years ago. The RoadHawk HD is now available directly in the US.

I have the "4Sight" dashcam in my car and TV. Not cheap, but has every bell and whistle you can think of. Audio, front AND rear simultaneous video, GPS, speed, KML Google map tracking, 32GB card, loop recording, impact recording, both front and rear cameras are adjustable, etc. I've had both units since 2012 and no problems. Video is crystal clear to the point you can read the tags of cars near you and identify faces of drivers.
Cost about half of most high-end dashcams. I think I paid $220 for mine AND it does front and rear at the same time.

How about a GoPro? I've used mine as a dash cam as well as a dive camera for video and stills. It's so versatile. If your going to spend the money that has been mentioned in other posts, get a camera you can continue to use after you park.

Just a thought.

Although the GoPro camera is probably one of the best cameras available, be aware that most, if not all, GoPro Cameras do not have 'true looping'. It will loop until the camera is shut off, at which point it saves the video to the card and will not write over it. Eventually, the card gets full and the camera shuts off ... not good for a Dash Cam.

I moved my GoPro into a different job and replaced it with a SJCAM SJ4000:
SJCAM SJ4000 Action Camera (Black) SJ4000B B&H Photo Video

It's no GoPro, but does have 'true looping', fits GoPro mounts, and does a good job as a 'one-direction Dash Cam'.
