Dealer Un-Prepped Unit
Hey guys, I am looking heading to RV Nation tomorrow to look at a camper that I have been talking to Brannon about for some time now. They just received late in the day yesterday. They said they also got 30 units in at the same time.
RV Nation is about a 2 hour drive from me. I would really like to just head there once and bring it home. Unfortunately, tomorrow is one of the only days I can get up there with my Wife to see the unit.
What is all done during the Dealer Prep? They are only open from 9am to 3pm on Saturdays and said the guys are booked getting other campers ready for pickup.
If I was just to bring it home, what would I be missed out on? Or is it just smarter to go see it, then come back and figure out another time to actually go pick up the camper.
Please school me
And the camper is 2016 Hemisphere Lite 27BH
Thanks,
- Mark

Boy Howdy ... I second DON"T DO THAT. If you don't have time to get it any other day ... either make time or just figure you don't need it that bad. They don't come to a dealer all put together as in televisions unmounted / propane tanks filled / battery / packing materials removed / hooked up to see if stuff even works / leaks checked / scuffs and scrapes repaired / on and on. That being said many dealers half a** most of what I mentioned above ... Your personal walk thru and "look it all over" should take several hours alone after it is prepped by the dealer. I seriously doubt if a dealer would let you just hook up and drive off anyways.

That is what I assumed. And I don't believe I would every leave a dealer anyway like that. I was just more wanting to know what all was done during Prep. - Thanks guy.

That initial walk through with the dealer at purchase/pick-up may be the only opportunity to DOCUMENT any issues that you see to insure that they are covered as warranty issues. It is very hard for the dealer to argue about fixing something when you are standing right there in his face.
Take full advantage of that time even at your worst inconvenience! Make them do THEIR job up front with the full dealer prep.

A good dealership will go through the unit with a fine tooth comb while testing the systems & checking that everything works from one end to the other. This include water heater, shower, faucet's, slides, oven, stove, microwave, awning works correctly, etc.. Also checking little things like drawers & blinds opening & closing, light fixture's, etc..
Sometimes things need adjusting or fixing for whatever reasons. And some service departments are known to borrow parts from units for sale on the lot. You should also do a complete inspection of the unit from top-to-bottom to make sure it's acceptable and that everything works.
Allow time for them to prep your unit completely for delivery. If you cut corners with time you might end up spending more time taking it back to be serviced.

Thanks for the replies everyone. We actually went and drove over today to check out the camper. It was in great shape. Sat in every seat, opened every blind, drawer and window.
Just needed the detail team to go through it, clean some of the saw dust and wipe things down. Everything looked good though. Put down a hold and will pick it up hopefully before Thanksgiving.

Don't sign and pay until you are sure everything woeks like it should. Once they have your money, you will have no leverage to get things fixed in a timely manner. You are buying the unit to enjoy, not parked at a dealer waiting warranty repairs.

Like Flybob said DO NOT SIGN any paperwork until everything is fixed and/or working correctly. After you sign paperwork it is yours and now all repairs are warranty work. And now it is put in line to be fixed could be days or months.

I can't imagine any reputable...emphasis on reputable...dealer allowing a unit to leave their dealership without them having prepped it as you say. If they did, then they don't truly care about you as a customer.

Dealer Un-Prepped Unit
Check every light and switch, water pump, water heater, AC, heat pump if applicable, furnace, faucets, shower and outside shower or sprayer.
Sometimes they come to the dealer with no battery or not hooked up, so they have to do that too.
And hey - have fun and good luck!

Many travel trailers arrive at dealers without batteries, battery box, propane tanks and propane etc. These will all be additional expenses to you. This is not a problem if you are aware and figure them into the cost. Also units are usually pretty dirty inside and out so you will be doing some cleaning. If you do take the unit unprepped, Be sure to go up on the roof immediately and check for questionable caulking. There were about 8 spots on my TT that the dealer retouched ( slightly different color caulk) after receiving it.
