I learned how to drive a stick shift with a 1942 Willy's Jeep (an old army jeep) that we used as a tractor on the horse ranch.

And one of the things I towed with it...a manure spreader like the one in the photo above!

Brought my New-to-me class A home. Had two spotters watching the rear carefully as I backed up. Had it almost all the way back, and the mail box on the other side of the road "jumped in front of me".

Lesson learned - Always consider what is in the path of the swing on BOTH ENDS.

I have been backing trailers up for 34 years. First was a car trailer with a sprint car on it. Before that I did back a few cars in line at my Uncles junk yard with the wrecker. He taught me to back anything up is simple. Back to your side whenever possible. Keep it tight on your side, the other side will take care of itself. Never be embarrassed to get out and look a time or two to get a mental picture of what is back there and see where you are. Finally if anyone is ever watching, nothing will ever go where you want it! LOL

Another tip to make backing simple, just move steering hand to the bottom of the steering wheel. Then, if you want rear of trailer to go Left, move steering wheel (at the bottom) to the left. Same for making rear go right only move hand to the right. Start slow and steer the rear of the trailer as it moves, NOT the truck.

Been backing trailers 53 years. Never could get the hold the bottom of the steering wheel. Go left turn right, go right turn left just easier for me.
