Do you run with your LP on or off

You can vote for 1 or 2 AND 3 if you choose.

This topic comes up all the time, usually from
new folks.
Just out of curiosity let's run a poll and see
how many do run with LP on and how many don't.
You can post a reply and give your reasons or just
vote in the poll.

Happy camping!

Against the law in British Columbia, Canada to travel with propane on. We turn ours on when we stop for lunch or coffee and it stays cold enough.

My opionion is it's only dangerous if you crash. As dumb as that sounds. I will probably run with it on. But if someone is somewhat concerned make sure to leave on plenty before you leave then you can probably go about 6 hours or so before it needs to run again.

Hmmm.....I am not sure if cutting it on for that short of a time is beneficial or not. It takes time for the coolant to heat, then make its way around the system to cool down. MIne takes several hours before the fins start to get cold.

As you can tell by my handle I am a fire fighter. I have seen a forest fire caused by a malfunctioning fridge in a motor with the pilot on while traveling. I rolled my own TT and TV on the free way. The biggest concern was the leaking propane. An open flame could have caused a tragic end. Also an open flame while refueling would be a huge risk. You are dealing with a gas that has a potential to cause an explosion and needs to be treated with respect. We all want to make it home.

I hear you but a malfunctioning appliance can cause
a fire whether you're moving or not.

Instead of packing a cooler like we used to do, we now run the fridge a couple days to cool down. Then we load our perishible things in the fridge along with a jug of ice, and it stays nice and cool for 8 hours or so.

I don't really know if it's unsafe to run with the gas on, but this way we remove any doubt. Just my .02 worth.

I've done it but I've also seen pictures like this.... Photoshopped? Not sure, but can't beat the camper name.

Appropriate name for that trailer.

Scary. The fridge vent is not involved (yet), so it is unlikely the fire started there.

This polls needs to keep going as many don't know if they can or should use their refer on propane and 12 volt while on the road.
Lets get more feedback to help others.

I have a 2way fridge 110vac / 12 vdc propane. After about 20,000 mile in the last 10 yrs not had a problem. IMHO if I were worried about it catching fire going down the road, I would never allow my grand kids or my wife sleep in it.

If we really think about, your odds are much greater having an accident while towing than the fridge catching fire.

As far as the accident with the gas on, there is a over flow valve that if a line rupture during the accident the over flow preventer will shut the gas off at the tank. Heck I can't even open the tank valve very fast or it will trip and shut off the gas flow.

The only time I have shut my gas off was going through the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel.

Enjoy and safe travels.

IMO...I think you are in greater danger of being struck by lightning than being involved in a fire caused by the refrigerator running on propane. Some statistics indicate engine and electrical malfunctions cause 70% of RV fires and another 20% attributed to brake and tire failures with the remaining 10% spread among, fuel leaks, solar power problems, cooking carelessness, propane leaks, spontaneous combustion in damp charcoal and a range of unknown origins. Personally, I have never seen a burned motor coach, 5th wheel or travel trailer on the side of the road; but I have seen many automobiles and trucks either on fire or burned out with no other vehicle involved. Something to think about, but I don't worry about it.

We run with the propane off because where we live there are numerous tunnels in every direction and you have to stop and be inspected for "gas off".

Just wondering how anyone could prove the fire was caused by the camper fridge?
As for a leaking propane tank after an accident, that is why they have the auto-shutoff valves now.

We travel with the gas o . Having a 2way auto fridge, it makes it nice to load the fridge at home, so when we arrive, there are cold beers waiting!

For the curious, The "Inferno" is a real fire (not photoshopped). Here's another angle:

According to the owner, the fire was started by an electrical short. (no mention of the location of the electrical short) Two of their Harleys were in the trailer and were lost in the fire.
Took place near Mobile, AL on May 28, 2010 and was responded to by the Spanish Fort, AL fire department. No one was hurt.
