Door self-locking and interchanageable keys

We usually do not lock our FR Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite when just walking to the trash dump, so when we returned to a locked door and realized we didn't have the keys, we retraced our steps. No keys! Hubby looked in the rear window and sure enough, there were BOTH sets of keys still hanging on the rack.

There was only one other rig in the CG that night, and when he saw hubby looking for keys he came out to help. Said he had heard of other campers that locked out their owners. Just for the heck of it, he went back and got his keys for his travel trailer (NOT a Rockwood), and after some finagling, the door actually opened! There are two locks and he managed to get both open with his keys! Now we feel a little insecure knowing how easy it was to use a different set of keys to get into our rig.

Is this true for most campers or was it a fluke? If anyone with a set of camper keys can wiggle our locks loose, then we need to find another way to secure the unit.

Don't go to an RV show. Dealer has,one key that fits the handle key. Dead bolt is a different key, but only so many combos.

Yeah!! You should ask for a different lock from your dealer. It is really insecure if your vehicle can be unlocked with someone's key.

Agree with Deuce,if you had Both Locks on 1 Door locked that is ODD your Neighbors keys would unlock Both! Since you are a "Little Insecure" about how Easy it is to access your Rig,wait till you Read/Hear about the "CH 751"Locks on the Storage Doors! Youroo!! PS I am still trying to figure out How you "Shut the Door With the DEAD Bolt in the Locked Position"?? Can't be done!

Every time we've dropped our trailer at the dealer they always say the same thing, don't lock the dead bolt. The dealers have keys that will open the door lock but not the dead bolt lock on the door.

It would be extremely unusual if your camping neighbor's key opened the dead bolt. And like Youroo I'd like to know how the door closed with dead bolt in the locked position?

Both our FR travel trailer and our Grand Design travel trailer have the same key for the lock and for the deadbolt in each case. I've never understood the comment that "we can unlock the regular lock, but not the deadbolt". Maybe we have had 2 "flukes"? Oh yes...the CH751 LOL. All that does is keep the storage doors from bumping open during the drive ! One key fits all no matter the brands as far as I've seen in our seasonal campground.

We've just always had to convince ourselves that 1) most campers in an RV park are honest and aren't going to ransack our trailer; and 2) locks simply keep the honest people out, not the thieves and do we just want our things stolen from inside or do we want the door bent all to heck AND our things stolen.

We've been RVing since 2001 and to the best of our knowledge never had a single item stolen - including BBQ supplies, fishing equipment, etc. that we leave under the trailer when not in use. We did, however, have four saltwater fishing rods/reels stolen out of our pickup while parked for 20 minutes at a mall in Corpus Christi, TX.

Yes you have one key for both the door lock and the dead bolt but the dealers master key will only work on the door lock and not the dead bolt.

I'd still like to know how your dead bolt locked.

We have 3 keys. Bins, door handle and dead bolt. Only can handle be locked without a key. Always have them in my pocket when I go out!

The key to my storage compartment on our 2018 Cherokee, also fits my sons 2018 Jayco compartment and my neighbors 2007 Montana...and vise versa. I'm redoing all the locks on the compartments.

Quick story to go with this. Brother in law loses keys to trailer. Side storage compartment unlocked...and leads under bed. He's older and taller, so I climb in to lift bed...unlock door. They own two medium size dogs...I'm under bed...and as soon as I begin to lift bed...both rascals dive on it ! B.I.L. taps on window to get there attention and they run over. I start to lift bed...they see it...and BOOM ! they both dive on again. Did this about 3 times before I was quick enough to lift it before they crashed on top me again. Got door open and found keys laying under the steps....just outside the door. AAAAARRRRRG !!

On my first ever camping trip my daughter lock our camper door with both sets of keys inside. I remembered the dealer saying that there was really on about 5 different sets of keys for camper locks so I went camp site to camp site trying other people's keys. About 10 of them. Then the campsite next to me showed up from being gone most of the day and his key worked. I was very thankful that day that other keys could unlock the doors.

Yes, it's not just campers. At a campground we frequent, I noticed that a key was left in the lock of one of their commercially made poop-bag dispensers. Sure enough, it was a CH751.

My suspicion on the dead bolt was it was partially engaged and when the door was shut it "flexed the frame slightly" and closed allowing it the enter the cavity. Did it finish locking from the jarring of the door? I dunno. That would almost have to be it.

an easy solution to this is to hide a key. I carry back-up keys in my left pocket for everything that's important. Yes...I am old and forgetful. What was I talking about?
