Driver's License Dilemma

Surely someone else has come across this problem:

I have been a full time RV'r for just over a year. A few years back, I sold everything and now travel and have no physical address. I travel the country and have my mail (junk mail) forwarded once a month to where ever I happen to be. I own no property (home) nor do I normally stay in established campgrounds very long.

Problem: My New Mexico driver's license has just come up for renewal and they do not recognize a PO Box as an address. Plus you have to show 2 forms of proof that you actually reside at a physical address. A supervisor at the NM DMV had no answer to this problem. As far as they're concerned, I'm up a creek without a paddle. What to do?

So what state is your RV registered in? Time to get an address there. Later RJD

Might be time to look into a mail service n SD, and may save you some taxes, reg in the long run. Think the new rules is all sates must mail drivers license to a physical address.

Short term rent somewhere? That way you can sign a lease and have an electric bill.

The Real ID Act might play havoc with nomadic lifestyles. I searched for info but couldn't find any good articles that were written after this went into affect. Texas still appears to be a good bet to pick as your residence state. Hopefully someone will chime in who has dealt with this recently as I'm sure several of us are interested in the solution. Good luck!

Driver's License Dillema

Thanks to all of you.
My vehicle and trailer are registered in New Mexico....but according to the DMV that doesn't count as proof of residence. Even my Good Sam Ins. card has my P.O. Box as the address so that doesn't count. I spend 7 months of the year in Calif. and 4 months in Colo. so I might just try those states. I guess I'm going to have to do some researching. You know, the whole idea of living "off grid" was to avoid all of this. I guess I was dreaming! I don't want to rent. I don't want to establish an electric bill. I pay all my bills on-line and have no need of a permanent address. What do the poor homeless do? I guess they don't drive.

Be sure and do research on taxes and vehicle registration costs. I know CA is one of the worst.

I have a physical address, a house, but I don't get mail here. The street address is NOT my mailing address. My mailing address is a Shipping and Postal Unlimited mail drop. It's a "PMB", or Private Mail Box. But they have a street address too. It's a two line address.
I'd try renting one of these boxes and use that.

Other than that, I gots no clue! Other than........if you are renewing your DL, and not getting a brand new one, why do they even know you aren't at the old address anymore? Or, how do you know it came up for renewal (other than just thinking to check it)?

Do you have a relative who will let you make their home your legal residence? You could rent a closet from them, become one of the family...

In NM, because of the Real ID Act, you now have to prove your physical address with 2 documents such as utility bills when renewing license. Most states are changing their rules also due to this act.

My utility bill isn't mailed to my physical address where the utilities are.

Nothing is.

But it exists. (Actually, UPS knows me by this, but not USPS).

That link was very helpful.
Sounds like South Dakota might be my new home - officially, that is!

Notice that the article was written in 2011, before most states made any changes in license requirements due to the act. I haven't found a current article yet about this problem, but this article does give you a starting place!

We fulltime. My wife and I used Florida (state income tax and home school reasons). The states that are most picked by fulltimers to establish residency are Florida, Texas, and South Dakota (in no particular order). Others are used, of course. These 3 have no state income tax and lax residency proof.

As I mentioned, we did Florida. We did need a few documents establishing our identities and proof of residency. I forget what we used- but I believe a bank statement and a couple of other things- no utilities (we have none). The Florida website lists it out nicely.

We went to the driver's license center closest to our mailing service. They were familiar with Florida law and rules regarding licenses. For instance, my address on my driver's license is the license plate number of my camper (since that's my residence)- you should see some of the weird looks we get!

sbimailservice.com is a Florida company that handled receipt of our mail while we were on the road all summer. They also advertise that they will assist you in obtaining a Florida drivers license. They will ship mail to you any where you request and help you establish Florida residency. Hope this helps.
