Electric tongue jack

Ok I never thought about this. I thought they was pretty weatherproof. But my jack is not working. It will try the fuse is good. I can use a wrench on it. When I took the plug off top was wet inside. Can it be saved or is it done for and need replaced.

Do you know the brand? Lots of failures of the LCI factory supplied jacks documented on this page. Water pretty much can find its way into anything...I keep mine covered with a 5 gallon bucket and attach the chains to the handle so the wind does not take it.

if the fuse is good, check to see if its getting power. The switch could also be bad. If its the motor, you likely will be finding a replacement jack.

Had the same issue. Ended up taking the electric motor apart on a camping trip, removed the rust inside on the rotor and stator. Lucky for me that fixed the issue for now. I now use a cover to keep water out.

I've had to fix / replace two because of this. The first jack seized the motor up and a crank wouldn't even turn it. Had to take the gears out of the top (was half hitched up at the time) to get it off the truck. The replacement jack was a different design, but managed to get water in the switch housing. Corroded the contacts clean off. Replaced the switch on that one. I cover them now but you'd think something designed to be on the outside of a trailer would be more water tight....

Just my experience, I had thought the one I used to have went bad as well. I checked the connection to the battery and it was just a tiny bit loose. Tightened it up and it worked fine. Must really need good contact to work.


But with water in yours that points to something else.

Yes I think it does too. And the sad part is the plug had never been off of it smh. Live and learn. Bet the new one will stay covered

Well I have been working on my jack and if I tap it on the sides it will try to run. The two screws on top I can get to. But there are two that you need a 6" + screw driver to get the cap off. So I hope to get in there this week. It may be a lose wire or something but I hope to find out soon

It could be the grounding. These jacks are grounded via the mounting bolts. If I remember when I installed one there was a star washer that went under one of the mounting bolts between the base and the trailer tongue to help ensure a ground connection. I would take the bolts loose and use a wire brush to make sure you have a good ground contact.

Like RYand, I keep a bucket on mine.

I have a Barker brand. This is my second trailer with this brand electric Jack. They are "made in USA" and very good quality.

Buy a Barker,made in the USA and very good jack,BUT buy and Use the "Barker Cover" they Might "GIVE" you a cover where you purchase! Youroo!!

Mine was the same. You may have rust inside the electrical motor. I took mine apart and cleaned the rust off the rotor. Been working as normal since then.

I had the same issue from water damage- tapping it would get it barely moving, took it apart, cleaned rust off, re-lubed it, it's worked since. 5 gallon bucket now protects it from further damage.

Do you drive down the road with the 5 gallon bucket on? I can see if you are parked but what if it is raining while towing?

A little water won't hurt it. It's when it sits outside uncovered for months on end. I just tie a plastic grocery sack over it. It's not completely water tight, but it does the job. I wouldn't worry about running down the road.

Found a motor and gears on eBay for $53. That is a lot better than $238 for a new jack.

Well my new motor and gear box will be here Saturday. Took the old one apart. Was not water in it. Just thinking maybe it went bad. There was water in the very top of it. But not the motor. But anyway this one will be covered up. $66! Shipping and all. A lot better than $238 for a new jack lol.

Been researching tongue jacks the last two replies settled it I'm ordering a Barker Monday. Looks like I can order direct. I'll make sure I get a cover. Is the cover tight enough to drive with it on?

Recently Dawn upgraded her kitchen canisters. I brought the old ones down to the workshop - turns out the largest one makes an ideal jack cover.
