Empty campgrounds?

We've been out three times so far this year. On our first trip to Shawnee SP in PA, I expected the cg to be kinda empty. It was the first/middle of May and the weather still wasn't the greatest.

Our 2nd outing was to Blue Knob SP in PA over Memorial Weekend. I've seen that park full during the same time in previous years. Not so this year.

This weekend, we arrived in Swallow Falls SP on Thursday evening and were only one of two camp sites occupied! Even by Saturday, there probably weren't any more than a dozen sites occupied. I've seen this campground full many times in the past.

Schools in this part of the country are still in until this coming week due to making up snow days. Could this have been the reason so few people were in the campground? But what about Memorial weekend? What about your part of the U.S.?

Been out four times this year, all weekends and one Monday. The cg was usually 75% full but was a ghost town Monday.

All was in Ga.

Could be empty since the first two SP in PA don't have water at the sites, and the last one, Swallow Falls, only has three spots with W/E?

Swallow Falls has 3 sites with full hook-ups, but that has never stopped people from being there before. Same with Blue Knob. Usually see plenty of tents, pups and other tt's no matter what. And at Blue Knob, I think all the sites have electric.

Side note - one of the three full hook-ups at Swallow Falls is usually for the Camp Host. There wasn't even a Camp Host there this weekend. We've always seen one there in previous years starting from Memorial Weekend on....

Just spent the weekend at Dan Nicholas in Salisbury, NC it was full, we have made reservations in Rock Hill, SC for next week, we barely got in, tried to make a reservation at Stone Mt, NC couldn't get a site, full. Will say that Dan Nicholas is a great place to go, a lot to do for the kids. We will definately go back!

When we were in SD. the campground was empty for the most part.
Where we are now it is near empty, there was 4 rental rigs here but they are gone now there are two big FW here but the owners are gone.
Windy, hot and quiet.

We stayed at Locust Lake SP in PA over Easter weekend and it was pretty full. Over Memorial Day weekend we stayed at Gifford Pinchot SP in PA and that was full. Just got back from a private campground, Twin Grove RV Resort, that was also pretty full. There are a lot of seasonal sites at Twin Grove so that accounted for a lot of the people however, other parts of the park were full.

Last weekend we got to Hillsborough SP NE of Tampa on Thursday. it was 20% and quite. By Saturday was closer to 90% and noisy. I don't even bother trying to get into state parks around me anymore on holiday weekends, I go with KOA's and such where I have a guaranteed reservation.

The older I get the less likely I am to camp on a holiday weekend. I'm also told I'm grumpy.

Everywhere just gets too crowded for me.

At the county park we stayed at over the Memorial weekend in MN the park was full by Friday afternoon and emptied out by Monday afternoon. We made reservation in January and we got the last four sites an hour after they started taking reservations. Most of the the county and state parks are full every weekend and you need to make the reservation several months in advance if you want any chance of getting a spot. Monday thru Thursday you can get any site you want.

That's a good thing about MD and PA State Parks. Both have an on-line reservation system. Our reservations were made back in the late Fall. I can reserve up to a year in advance in MD and 11 months in PA, which I usually do.

State parks in MN also can be made a year out. County parks are anywhere from the first of the year to only three months ahead. On those you better be online or on the phone right away or you won't get a site.

Kids are still in school this week in many northern states. I think that's the reason. We did a shakedown this weekend at the local SP. It was about 25% full. Last weekend it was about 50% full. Next weekend it Father's Day. Might be something about being too close to it??

Not sure why Dave posted that info ? Florida State parks have reservations.

I know the campgrounds I've got reservations are in CGs that gave very few spots left. Payne on Allatoona in Georgia in 2 weeks had a few spots left, but it's not one of the best on the lake, but we wanted a waterfront site. Gulf State in Gulf Shores Alabama was almost full when we made reservations a few weeks ago for the week after the 4th of July. Then we are back to Allatoona at Sweetwater CG... It was filling up, but you can still get a waterfront site as of this past week.

Going to Payne is a joke for us. It's less than a mile as the crow flies from the house, but we wanted to just relax and have a place we could leave the boat in all week. Even though we're so close to home, we're not at home if that makes sense. I'm still working that week, so DW and DD and DS get to hang out, play at the beach and we'll do some evening boat cruises during the week when it's nice and calm.

Hey, if the CG is nice, what's the difference a mile or a thousand?

I've got a camper that hasn't been used since April and a nice CG that's 15 miles away. Care to guess what I'm planning? Yep, exact same thing. Pull her out, setup, go home, get the company car and just use that as my home for a week, maybe two.

So it's not a joke. At all.
