Extended Warrantee -- good idea or rip off?

Buying a new Sunseeker 3120DS. One of the options we are being offered is an extended warrantee (7yrs/80Kmiles). Cost is almost $2,000. It's the 'Diamond Package' from Phoenix American.

Seems like a lot -- I almost never buy extended warrantees as a general rule but this is a big investment with lots of things to break.

Has anyone had experience with RV extended warrantees in general or with Phoenix American ?

A very quick Google search revealed this site....

Ripoff Report

Be very careful to do your research. I was also offered this and took a pass on it after what I found doing just a bit of research online...

I have had Extended Warranty with RV Protection.net If my memory serves me right I had $50 Ded and got 5 years for $750 but that was several years ago. Had a few claims and they were great.

We too were offered an "extended" warrantee with our recently purchased 2010 8315BSS for around the same price. After hemming and hawing, we declined. Lo and behold - dealer sales manager almost immediately found a way to reduce the price by $500.00 ! Hemmed and hawed some more, declined again. Maybe taking a chance, but that's life !!
Moral of the story: If you decide to go for the extended warranty - grind 'em as much as possible on the price!

However, I do think that the extra year Forest River coverage for not much more than a hundred bucks is not a bad deal.

Forest River offers a one year additional warranty on its products for $100 over the original warranty. Additionally, each component manufacturer has its own warranty on the component they provided for the vehicle. I would only get the FR additional warranty and not get an extended warranty from an outside source. Most items will fail in their first year anyway so IMO extended warranties are a cash cow for the provider, and a waste of money for the rest of us.

Also, the dealer makes a LOT on selling you the warranty.
