Extended warranty? Yes/No

Any one have suggestions on the value or lack there of, in purchasing an extended warranty on a new TT?
We just purchased a new Apex 235bhs Coachman and will be doing our walk through and all the paperwork on Monday. One question will be, the extended warranty.
YES OR NO?

I would take the additional 1 year that FR offers, but nothing past that. It's only $150 so if anything at all needs warranty work in the second year you would have probably spent more than that anyway. If not, it's a pretty gentle hit.

Be aware, you only have 10 days from the date of delivery to take advantage of it, and some dealers will pretend not to know that the option exists. :-)

We took the extended with our Salem hemisphere because of all the slide outs and electric jacks. I think it was through primo I'd have to look but for me it gave me piece of mind having key components covered and typically the dealer will give u a better deal on it if they think your on the fence

That's no longer strictly enforced.

Do a search under Extended Warranty and you'll see ALL kinds of posts re. this subject. FR offers a second year bumper to hitch warranty on most of their TTs (I think excluded units are recent FR acquisitions). Mine cost $150 and this is chump change compared to what the dealer will try to sell you. My dealer never mentioned this option and it was not in the packet they gave me. I learned of this thru this forum. Dometic does offer a 3 yr program on the A/C after the first 2 yrs for a total of 5.

Other than that, after the second year you'll need to check other options if you still want warranty type coverage. Progressive Insurance has a mechanical breakdown product for RV's I'll likely look into down the road.

YES OR NO?
NO

I don't usually buy any extended warranties on products so I am biased (full disclosure) with the exception of certain electronics for certain kids in my family, who shall remain nameless, who consistently need the warranty.

But with RV's I don't buy it as I think the 1-2 years you get from the manufacturer is sufficient to find problems that occurred during the manufacturing process. Also, remember that your appliances and other items likely have their own separate warranty coverage.

Most importantly - a thorough inspection by you BEFORE you sign their paperwork will help you to avoid buying a lemon. See any good PDI list floating around the interwebs. Here's one ... Forest River Forums - Downloads - PDI Checklist

But, if you are still interested in pursuing this, then I think its like any other extended warranty decision.

Considerations of the coverage include:
1) How much does it cost (upfront and deductible)?
2) How comprehensive is the coverage and for how long?
3) Who is authorized to complete repairs?
4) what is the financial health and the history of the company providing the reinsurance?
5) Is it transferable?

Considerations of your personal situation might include:
1) How risk-averse are you? Or IOW, how much risk are you willing to take on yourself if you don't buy it?
2) How handy are you completing the inevitable repairs yourself after the manufacturer warranty is finished?
3) How long will you own the trailer?

$2000 + for extended warranty? WHAT!

Ok so I've read through many threads about this $150 for the extended FR 1 year... Is there an option to get this direct from FR? The dealership here has a ridiculous price of over $2000 for the 1 year and almost $3000 for 5 year.

Triguy. I checked one of your posts from 2013 regarding that additional 1 year OPP from FR. They said in 2013 that Coachmen didnt qualify. Do you know if this has changed? Can we get any additional warranty on our 2015 Coachman Apex? Our dealership is trying to jab us with a $2500 charge for 1 additional year and nearly $3000 for 5 years.... Yeah... Doesnt make any sense to me either.

Has not changed. None of the RV brands that FR acquired during the recession, qualify for it
Only original FR brands and Palomino, which FR acquired nearly 10 years ago.

I would run from that, That is awful expensive no matter what it covers. No extended warranty will cover structure at all. Mostly appl. and slides only. You can get extended from all the appl. you would have to contact each one and find out. Probably would be a lot cheaper. You can get a 7 year from Cornerstone in NC for about 1700.00 for 7 years, it is transferable and you can cancel at anytime. They have been good to me so far. I had it on my old trailer and when I bought my new one they transferred what was left to the new for 50.00 bucks.

Well, I could be wrong about something.
Didn't know Shasta was on the list, which was one of the newer acquisitions.
I do seem to remember that, when FR acquired these other makes, they just rolled over what the original manufacturer offered as a factory warranty.
So maybe that's why Palomino and Shasta are on the 2nd year warranty list, while Coachmen, Dynamic and Prime Time are not, since they originally only offered a 1 year warranty.

ddlx, you might try contacting them to verify. Neither Dan nor I are associated with FR and maybe they've changed the list again. Who knows? Rhonda Yoder (574-534-3167) used to be the one to talk with.

Just called on my Shasta Phoenix and was told $200. I asked about time limit and she said the form says 10 days but they are not holding people to it since they no longer allow credit card payments. She said there should have been a form in my owners package but I never saw one, first I heard of this option was on this forum.

Not a big fan but for RVs, I absolutely feel its worth it. I usually go with the 5 year plan and my deductible (no matter how many issues) is $100 per visit.

Extended Warranty prices???

Thanks, I did contact Rhonda at FR and Coachman is Not included on the extended option. I do agree with the option for the extended warranty, but at these rates, WOW! thats a big % of the actual purchase price.
24mos - $50 deduc = $2266
84mos - $50 deduc = $2703

The 24 month deal sounds like a ripoff, the 84 month however sounds pretty good. That's an additional 6 years for less than 400 a year. Ask if they have a 100 deductible that may save some money. I have had good luck with Wholesale Warranties out of San Diego. They will negotiate some if you contact them about 6 months from the factory warranty expiring. I guess they feel safe that if there was a problem existing they would not have to cover it.
