Don't see any safety issue as nothing is moving and the emergency brake should be engaged on the truck and the trailer wheels chocked before hooking the trailer break away cable, etc.

I have had both and apparently I'm the oddball as I like it between the wheel wells and cab. I don't have to crouch under the 5er to hook it up, I can just reach over the bed and plug it up.
My current TV has it by the tailgate and while it's not inconvenient, it's just not as easy for me as reaching over and plugging it in.
