I think that's why kids (especially) and adults are so sick in today's world, as well as all the "new" diseases seen today. We've killed our immune system and strengthened these bugs with all this stuff.

Remember grandma saying "everyone needs to eat their peck of dirt"!

Absolutely true! Many years ago (back when it was safe) I would travel down the Gulf coast to Tampico Mexico with my buddies for a long weekend of fishing and drinking. Our friends who lived in that town took us to eat at a hole in the wall along the river that they frequented. They recommended the raw oysters which three of my buddies ordered as did our local friends. I happen to notice the opposite side of the river was lined with shacks and a woman was washing clothes along the bank, so I went with the fried shrimp. My three American buddies spent the next three days in the hotel room with nausea, projectile vomiting, explosive diarrhea and abdominal pain. The locals who ate the very same oysters had absolutley no adverse reaction to the local delicacy. It goes to show that our systems adapt to what we put into them.

Sorry, I was raised on a farm and around animals. Never worried about gloves or getting my hands "dirty". Just used good old soap and water (or just water if soap wasn't available - even washed up in the creek, river, pond, lake or animal water trough at times) after work or before eating, and I survived (as did my siblings, parents, aunts and uncles, grand parents, etc. back many generations).

Just saying?

If I thought about all the things I touch on a daily basis that have been touched by 100ís of other people or thought about all the things I might be breathing in when I walk outside, I would never leave my house.

Iíve survived this long without worrying about it too much. Even if I do get something, modern medicine has advanced enough to where I can go to the doctor and get enough antibiotics to knock it out of me.

Interesting fact to derail the thread a bit further- it's not "paper". It's actually a type of cloth.

My daughter works at a bank and has told me a few horror stories about the filth of money people bring in, stories that include words like 'roaches' and 'droppings' - she believes in the necessity of hand sanitizer and I don't blame her

Balance is important - you can't be hyper vigilant about everything but you do what you can and still enjoy your life - I still think the OP's experience is a good reason to clean up the fresh water tap and it isn't hard to spray a little bleach water or Lysol
