Almost there...
I will be retiring from the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office (SW Washington) on May 1, 2016 after 36 years of service. Not that I'm counting the days or anything. Been from the jail to Patrol, Services, Dets, Patrol and Detective Sergeants. Currently back as a Patrol Sergeant. I've had my good and bad times. Let the young lions take over!

Now I take him seriously
An entry I recently wrote on facebook after watching my son fight a structural fire near our home.
I smelled something very strong and very toxic. I walked out to my sidewalk and saw lots of smoke coming out of a house. Seconds later I saw my son zooming out of the driveway with his fire lights on. Then my heart started pounding, so I ran. I left all the doors of my house open, the dog sitting in the doorway, and I ran towards the fire, towards my son. I know he's an EMT & fire fighter, I thought I knew how much he loved what he does but watching in horror as my son entered a burning structure is just unimaginable. The focus in his big blue eyes, the determination on his face, the ease in which he took on this task was effortless. This is what he lives for...FIRE, emergencies, driving ambulances, saving people. My emotions ran strong and hard. I couldn't focus, I couldn't stop thinking of how proud I am, how scared I was and how scared he must be. I prayed HARD for his safety. My son...my only son went into a burning building without ever thinking twice about it, without ever turning back, without ever hesitating. Today I feared for life, I shook at the possibility that this may be the last time I see him. It's that real...it's that scary. "Mom, I want to be a fire fighter." I didn't take him seriously and I made him go to college. After he graduated with a Bachelors degree in art and minor in music he does this..his lifelong dream. now I do take him seriously, now I do. God bless you Joseph.

30yr career FF/PM/LT/Head of Dept. EMS Operations
Retired and don't miss the pencil pushing. Do miss the guys/gals. Don't miss "frequent flyers" and those suffering from "English Pottery Syndrom". Don't miss seeing the dead/dying, especially kids.
Been camping my whole life but my wife and I just bought our first RV. Can't wait to hit the road.

My sincere thanks and respect to all you public servants for all you do. Sometimes it's easy to overlook your role in protecting us.
As you all probably know,we here in parts of Texas have received heavy rainfalls recently. As a result, some of our roads and highways have been flooded and the public officials, news media, etc. have warned the public to obey the flooded road signs posted and not attempt to drive in flooded areas.
But yet, there have been several occurrences of people attempting to drive thru flooded areas and thus needing to be rescued by you people. Some of the occurrences have been accidental, but several are not - just stupid people being stupid and putting people like you in dangerous situations by needing rescueing.
I salute you all.

Retired since 2003, local PD in Westchester Co. NY (Sgt.) after 21 years. Career included patrol/administrative Sgt., firearms instructor & academy instructor.
Don't miss what the guys/gals have to put up with politically now. Gone are the days when an officers discretion and common sense would more often than not quell the situation.

I agree. We often had talks in the squad room about the days when we would become like the fire dept (not insulting you all) where we just wait for the call to come instead of looking for trouble like we do now. With all that is going on in this climate our guys are being less motivated to seek out trouble like they used to for fear of ending up in jail. It is no surprise south of us in Baltimore arrests have plummeted and crime has spiked because of it.
On car stops and arrests we almost always NEED to arrest or cite if it is warranted because someone has a camera either our own on my chest / car or a person's cell phone. They would be the first to point out how we did something wrong by letting one guy go and another gets arrested taking away our best asset... Discretion and common sense.

Not sure if this counts, 26 years as HR Director for our State's Forestry Commission. Wildland fire fighting is just one of our agency's responsibilities. Have the utmost respect for our guys/gals and all emergency response folks. Member of Adams County Search & Rescue, semi active member of Adams County Fire Services (Liberty Road).

I still have a problem with members of "Ball" teams making millions while our EMTs, Firefighters and Police can barely get by. Bless them all!

What really gets me is that these workers at fast food joints want $15 an hour for flipping burgers while we have EMT's/FF making less or just a little more than that!
