Firing up the camper oven
How is everyone starting these gas ovens? It takes two of us to light the pilot. Is there a trick to it?

I turn into a contortionist to light ours . Push the pilot knob with one hand and put my head in the oven and try to find the pilot with the other hand before the match burns out. She cooks, I light the oven
All of our rigs have had the same hard to light oven.

I think they need to leave these things as an option, 3 campers and we never fired the oven off except for the PDI to make sure it worked.

We have used ours every time we go out. Biscuits for breakfast , fresh bread for dinner. Even cookies. Not Tom mention cheesy potatoes

If we do light it use a BBQ lighter work's great don't worry about a match going out before you find the pilot burner. Later RJD

LOL... Oh I try those bbq lighters. We must have 5 of them in the RV, but do you think any of them actually work when I try to use them?

Because we are stationary for a period of time, we just leave the oven pilot on. Yah, it wastes propane but to avoid the above noted contortionist comments, well worth it.
I cannot understand why they can't run wire from the piezo spark igniter that lights the burners to the oven burner

I use a toaster oven. We are now in our 5th Fifth Wheel and ovens have always been a pain in behind to light and to use. I did find that if I keep an airbake cookie sheet in the oven, when I do use it, stuff isn't burned on the bottom and raw on top. Toaster oven is the way to go if you have room to store it. If you don't have room get rid of something else so you can store it.

Can't have a spark in the oven. If you turned on the gas with the oven door closed and left it on for just a short time, KABOOM!! Now you need a new trailer.

Gas ovens a pain
Agree with Two Ole Travelers...we finally got a toaster oven after the pilot would not stay lit...had to relight several times to get biscuits done. Now I wish the over were at least big enough to use for storage, but it isn't even convenient for that.
Our MH had only a convection microwave -- no oven -- and after I got used to it, I never missed the oven.

I just light the burner in the oven and then don't turn out the pilot until camping is over. Works for me but might be a problem when I can't get up off the floor any mire and toaster oven it is

contortionist
I have to lie on the floor with a flashlight aimed toward the pilot. Fire up my long neck lighter, and then the pilot will refuse to light. I feel like the woman who is saying "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up". We have only had the oven work once in two years. Getting too old for this endeavor any more.

1. Open oven door.
2. Get on one knee.
3. Move head low enough to get one eyeball pointed at the pilot.
4. Click 10" long BBQ lighter.
5. Repeat step 4 until lighter has flame.
6. Turn oven knob to PILOT.
7. Push knob in.
8a.If pilot light fails to light, repeat steps above (repeat step # depends on condition of knee).
8b. If pilot light lights, continue to hold PILOT knob in for "a while".
9. After "a while", release oven knob and turn to desired roughly approximate oven temperature.
10. If the oven lights, call someone to help you get up.

It takes a little time to purge the air
Have to agree with NMWildcat, Captn.Ken & aceinspp about lighters, but Mr. Dan nailed it. Good one, Mr. Dan!
Seems to me that AIR in the gas line causes the problem. Pilot gas flow is so small that it takes 3 minutes or so to purge the air so gas can burn & heat the thermocouple.
Before lighting, I set my expectation that I will be lying on the floor 3 minutes while the air purges. I know nothing else happens during purge time. Setting expectations in advance makes the experience much less annoying and eases frustration.

I usually don't have a problem. I use a lighter with a long snout rather than a match. The main thing to remember is to turn the knob to the Pilot position and then push it in and KEEP PUSHING IT IN until you get it lit. Otherwise, as soon as you let up on the button the gas flow cuts off and it won't light.

I think I saw one time where you could purchase an after market piezo kit to add to oven to light just like the top burners?

There was a manufacturing defect with the pilot circuit of some date range of Suburban ovens. Symptoms were that once the oven reached the set temperature the gas would throttle back until it went out. My dealer got that part from the manufacturer and fixed it for free last year (before the FR extended warranty was up).

It is an option when you factory order one. We went through that, and decided for resale, it's probably best to have one in there. Even though we rarely use it, someone looking at it may think it's a must have, just to discover they may rarely use it as well.

There is usually air to purge from the line. I open the oven, turn the knob to pilot, and then hold the knob in for a minute or so before attempting to light. Remember to continue pressing the knob for 10 seconds or so after it lights, to allow the thermocouple time to warm up.
