First winter to stay in rv. - QUESTION
First winter to stay in rv. QUESTION We just sold our home in Tulsa, OK and need to live here until husband retires in mid Jan. In the past, mew winterized and stored until spring. So, since we are living in it , do we need to worry about winter weather causing a problem? Need answers ASAP. Thanks.

Im not sure how cold it gets there but pipes freezing are your biggest concern but this will only be a problem if you have sub-freezing temperatures lasting several hours. A quick dip below freezing in the middle of the night shouldn't cause you a problem. The type of RV you have will also make a difference. Some are better equipped to handle sub-freezing weather better than others.
If you are anticipating a freeze, the first thing you should do is disconnect your city water hose and use your internal water tank. They hose will be the first to freeze. You can also run your heat and keep cabinet doors open to allow this heat to reach your pipes. If the freeze will be an extended one, winterize your lines and use bottled water.

What kind of temperatures are you expecting to have to endure until mid January?

It's 23° in Tulsa at this moment. Pretty chilly!

We have 37' 2004 Cardinal Platinum with Arctic package(which I don't really know exactly what that means). This week temp is expected to get down to 19 at night and 31-45 degrees during day. During days will be at work.

Some people will use insulation around the outside by the ground and put a heat lamp inside underneath to help keep the chill out

Yes, you need to protect your pipes. Tulsa gets plenty cold. Your incoming water line can freeze too.

Put an extension cord in the basement with an incandescent 100 watt light bulb. The heat from the light bulb will help protect your plumbing. I fill my fresh water tank and disconnect the hose when it dips down cold and then when it warms some reconnect the water hose and refill the fresh water tank. This prevents the hydrant from freezing and breaking.

Don't panic. Its no big deal (says one who is full time and it was 10 above last night. If you are fully hooked up, leave your gray tank open and et your cold water faucet run as thin stream. Our water hose, filter and water softener and pipes have never frozen in 15 years of full timing. Get a space heater or two. Use the camgrounds electricity that you are already paying for rather than your propane. Even if you are paying exrra for electric, a btu of eletric is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost of a btu of propane,(as rv propane furnaces afre notoriously inefficient. Just. feel the heat of the exhaust of your furnace that is all being wasted.)I have our furnace t'stat set on 60 degrees swo it will only come on if the space heaters and fireplace can't keep up with the temperature drop. Pull your day/night shade s down. This will help create a dead air space between the shade and the windows. We live in a 40' fifth wheel with a high ceiling with a fan. If ouhave a fan, turn it on to blow air down. This will break up , and reuse the heat that has stratified near the ceiling.

With your heat on and artic pack on, assuming you have one, everything should be fine unless gets below 20's for extended period. The exception would be your water hose, you can disconnect as stated above or get a heated one if you plan on cold weather camping. Good Luck!

The heated hose will only work for its length. The hydrant supply will still freeze without water flow.

The light bulb in the basement could constitute a serious fire hazard.

First Winter in RV
Filling fresh water tank is a good idea but remember to bring the hose in after you have filled the tank. Otherwise hose will freeze and then you won't be able to refill tank...... been there done that!

Wrapping some kind of skirting around the base could help and possibly adding a heater for the coldest nights. Does your MH have the spray foam insulation along with your Artic Pac tank heaters? A heated hose could be used also. Are you using the pillow foam inserts in your vents? Also; inside windows and skylights are you using Reflextic or foam core boards for added insulation at night? I also use reflextic panels in my cab windows to insulate, then close off cab area with a heavy blanket, as most heat loss comes from the cab area.

FYI. The Artic Pac is simply heat pads on your black, gray and fresh water tanks along with a few heat tapes around crucial elbows. They heat at about 40 degrees and shut off at about 60 degrees. I turn mine on at night in colder weather and off in the AM if things warm up.
Don't be afraid to ask any neighbors what they may be doing to protect themselves from the cold.

Done it a lot. Heated hose and and underpinning. Maybe run a hard pipe (schedule 40) for sewer. A dehumidifier or damp rod to handle the moisture in the camper.

Don't forget the outside shower (at the flushing station area). I asked the campground handyman for some fiber insulation to stuff full then lock it.
