Trip to Florida
If I were you I'd stay well clear of Florida...the red tides will kill you, the beaches are polluted and horrible, fishing sucks, the weather is ify, the people are for the most part unfriendly, roads are not straight and filled with potholes, lakes are too shallow, rivers incredibly windy and filled with black water, SNAKES, sand gets into everything, no culture, all the food is fried, nothing to see...nothing to do, it RAINS, poverty filth and pestilence rampant, and if that's not enough, we have a moron serving as governor. Keep to the north!!! (well...at least the part about the governor is true...)

I live 100 feet from the Gulf on the beach south of Sarasota...and I have COPD. In the past 10 years during the winter I bet there were less than 10 days total that I (and everyone else) was affected by Red Tide. It has to actually be there and the wind has to be blowing the spores on shore. Often it is well off shore and the wind has to be just right. Never saw a lot of dead fish...for me it beats grey skies, snow and freezing temperature anytime! Finally, even in the worst outbreaks I nobody ever had a problem inside the house or RV.

We just spent 2 nights at Henderson Beach State Park in Destin. They had Red Tide warnings but the water was clear, children played on the beach and no ill effects. Conditions could change but I would go for it! Rees

Headed to the Florida Panhandle in January. The Red Tide won't cause us to cancel but sure hope it is gone by then.

Florida Red Tide- cancel trip??
Heading out for the panhandle Saturday, would have left after thanksgiving, but was overruled, something about kids and Christmas, going to work on my charm and smile. A new 5th wheel would go a long way.

Wolverine1945, you normally hear about red tide locally on the TV news. They show crews cleaning dead fish off the beaches. There are fewer people on the beaches, but the people coming down from the north will be out there. Severe outbreaks last only a few days. Then the newscasters go on to sunny beaches, beautiful sunsets, and warm temperatures. Cold fronts with highs in the 60s is bigger news in SW Florida. If frost ever gets to the news, it's time to call out the National Guard!
SW Florida has been warmer this winter. Naples had a record 88 degrees yesterday. Fort Myers equaled the record of 86. Temperatures have been pretty steady at the mid 80s and lots of sun shine. There have only been a couple of showers in the past month. Humidity is another story.

Latest FWC Red Tide Report:
Based on the most recent available satellite images and analysis of water samples, patchy blooms of Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, persist along Okaloosa, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties in Northwest Florida and Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, and Collier counties in Southwest Florida. . Fish kills and respiratory irritation continue to be reported various areas throughout Northwest Florida, and are possible in all bloom areas.
Forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides shows western movement of bloom waters off Okaloosa County and little net movement of bloom waters along Bay and Gulf counties in Northwest Florida, and little net movement of bloom waters in Southwest Florida.
Due to the holiday, the next status report will not be available until Wednesday December 30, 2015.
This information, including maps and reports with additional details, is also available on the FWRI Red Tide website. The website also provides links to additional information related to the topic of Florida red tide including satellite imagery, experimental red tide forecasts, shellfish harvesting areas, the FWC Fish Kill Hotline, the Florida Poison Information Center (to report human health effects related to exposure to red tide), and other wildlife related hotlines.
To learn more about various organisms that have been known to cause algal blooms in Florida waters, see the FWRI Red Tide Flickr page. Archived status maps can also be found on Flickr.
The FWRI HAB group in conjunction with Mote Marine Laboratory now have a facebook page. Please like our page and learn interesting facts concerning red tide and other harmful algal blooms in Florida.
