For Hurricane Irma Evacuees

Any RVers headed out of harms way it will be difficult to find a place to wait it out. One suggestion. The Atlanta Motor Speedway is opening their camping facilities to evacuees at no cost. I don't know how may sites there are because they have it broken up in to various levels of service used during NASCAR events. There is probably at least close to 1,000 sites. I've never been there and probably never will go there. I did see there were at least 65 full hook ups but don't plan on getting any of those, they are used by the NASCAR drivers and other high rollers. It will basically be boondocking with restrooms and showers available at no charge. Generators can be used during specific hours. It will definitely be better than a Walmart. If you want information you can Google Atlanta Motor Speedway or call 770-946-4211 which I'm sure will be busy.

There are numerous COE campgrounds north of Atlanta on Lake Allatoona and Lake Lanier but there will only be a couple open (McKinney Campground for one - 678-721-6700) as most were shut down the day after labor day unless the Government decides to reopen them for the displaced people.

From the news I've heard it will be a nightmare coming up I-75 as traffic is already very heavy. You may want to have a good map and have an alternate route in mind. US Hwy 19/41 is probably the best alternate for now. 4 counties in GA are under evacuation orders now so I won't just be people from Florida.

The Atlanta Motor Speedway is located south of Atlanta near Hampton, GA. It is located on US Hwy 19/41 (the main road to Florida before interstates). There will be signs directing you to the proper entrance since there are numerous ones, Entrance E was the one to be used at least for now. They are used to large crowds so they will not be novices at handling it.

Things are nuts down here in Florida! I work in Gainesville and I-75 north was moving slowly there. The radio station said it was heavy to Lake City. I saw a number of RVs headed north, so I'm sure they will appreciate having somewhere to boondocks, if needed. Hotels are filled, I hear. Many gas stations out of gas, both along the interstate,as well as in town. I did see two at Williston Road exit that were still pumping thirty minutes ago. Grocery stores are down on goods and out of water. I have never seen anything like it. The good thing is that everyone is heeding the warnings to prepare early and evacuate the keys and south coast. There are mandatory evacuation areas along the coast in Broward county and the keys.

Along with the RV's there will be a lot of people sleeping in their cars since most of the hotel space in Atlanta is sold out already. I wish everyone luck in surviving the storm and hope it won't be a huge financial hit for a lot of people. Stay safe and travel safe, I'm sure tempers will flare so stay calm.

DD lives on the NW side of Houston, I talked to her on Labor Day and she said they are still evacuating people in some areas since they are releasing a lot of water to lower lake levels. SW Houston is still under water. Her house is on a higher elevation and she had no water damage of any kind but food is in short supply as well as no gas available but she has a full tank and can't go anywhere anyway because of the flooded roads.

It may be hotter than blazes here in the summertime and sometimes a little icy in the wintertime, but I'll take our climate and weather conditions, including the occasional tornado, over anything those poor folks in South Texas and Florida are experiencing now.

God Bless them all.

If Atlanta race track opens the full hooks up and partial hook up there are a lot of slot for that. Speed way can handle a lot of campers including the dry camping. It's a huge area for camping as we go every year to the races. They may even bring in folks to pump you out as they do for the races depending on how many folks take up the offer to camp there. Later RJD

I just had a return call from Atlanta Motor Speedway. Their full hookup sites are $20 per night. First come first served.
We had planned a 3week trip to the Grand Canyon spending the first night, Sept 14th at Anniston army depot. They've set me up for Sunday and Saturday as well if need be. GO ARMY!!!

I'm not sure what they are doing with Irma evacuations, but the University Station RV Park, Auburn, AL has 800 Full Hookup sites, 30/50 amps. You might give them a call if you are heading that way.

It is very good news that two major speedways have opened their grounds to evacuees. But with the public notices that these will be available, it will be a mad dash for limited openings. Considering the mass exodus from several areas, those slots are going to fill quickly. Without notice of those being full, it is going to cause another dilemma for people expecting an opening.

Perry Fairgrounds has opened some of their stables for any evacuated animals on a first come first serve basis. Reportedly all hotel rooms in Macon, Warner Robins, and Perry are full.

If we should decide to evacuate I will run up U.S. 19. Good 4 lane road and not much traffic ever.

Have a good road map/atlas to take the back roads. I-75 here in Atlanta going northbound is at a crawl and the exodus hasn't really started yet.

Bill, you might want to head toward Montgomery, if you can get a spot at Gunter Hill COE it would be great, all full hookups. Give them a call at Recreation.gov 877-444-6777 to see if they have any open spots, the problem is the locals fill it up on weekends. It is open year around. Or if they are full ask about Service Park, Silas, Al on US route 84. Not a big COE park but my favorite on the banks of the Tombigbee River. It is actually only 3 miles west of Coffeeville, AL, Silas is 12 miles west of the park.

Holiday Campground on West Point Lake, in LaGrange, GA. is reopening for evacuees. (It closed for the season on Tuesday after Labor Day.) It has over 150 campsites with 50/30 electric, and water. It has 2 dump sites. The phone number is 706-884-6818 or go to recreation.gov to make a reservation! Praying for all affected by Irma, Harvey, or fires!

Thanks Marvin, I will call them in the morning. The 11 PM report is not looking good at all for us here on the West coast and it looks like Georgia will not be too safe either.

Soon as I'm SURE which way it's going, I'm going elsewhere. NO sense in heading where they THOUGHT it was going 2 days ago or Yesterday.

It now looks like I'm at very fringe......but I may go north into northern NC for a few days.....leave Sunday probably.

Still monitoring.

Thanks. Gunter Hill.......like almost all COE parks........has no sewer. Not FHU.

But any port in a storm. I just do NOT want to go I-85 outta here through Atlanta if I can avoid it. North Carolina, WV, VA, that's the direction I'm now thinking. But monitoring.
