ford F150 ecoboost

Hello everyone

Bought a new wildcat max 30DBH TV is 2014 F150 ecoboost. I have read several posts about weight issues and now thinking my truck and hitch is not compatible, I went camping last weekend and it seemed to drive great no sway with about 20 mph winds on the drive out. I drove over mountain and noticed tranny temp at highest was at 215 this happened several times throughout the trip, no warning lights or bells sounded and dropped back down to about 204 throughout most of the trip. I have the equalizer hitch and airlift 2000. I started with 60 psi and the rear end felt like my grandma's old Cadillac so I increased the pressure to 80 psi which did wonders .

With all that said I prefer not to buy a 50K truck as I love my ecoboost for work, at the same time I don't have the peace of mind that something could happen while towing.

Does any body else have the same combination or similar to what I have, would much appreciate the feed back.

I'd say you're pushing it unless you have all of the trailering and Max payload type options. Even then, you are probably overloading your truck.

9000lb+ trailer with 1200lb+ of tongue weight. I say you're definitely pushing if not over. Especially if you don't have the Max Tow and Max Payload options.

Hello,

I towed with 10,000 lb 5th wheel with 2013 Eco fully decked out with all towing options. Normal towing temp is 192F, normal driving temp was 192F. Under heavy load with headwinds it would rise to 200 F.

You would be best checking the options maybe you don't have tow, a simple external transmission cooler might fix your problem. Also what gear are you in climbing the mountains, speed etc. I know dropping a gear and lowering speed was easier on it.

It was in the high 90s that day ,I decided to really give my ecoboost the test going up the hill, I was doing about 60 mph, always had tow option on and traction/sway control on. Not sure what gear I was in as I let tranny shift itself but it had to be in at least third gear.

Possibly a one shot deal then, I would check your equipment and make sure you have what tow pkg and just camp on. That is a hot day and maybe dropping 10 mph would bring load down a bit.

While towing down here in the Florida heat my trans temp can hover around 205 while traveling! Check the Ford ECO form for more info. 215 temp while under load over a mountain, in the late summer, seems normal!

Check the drivers door for you CCC (yellow sticker).

There is a recent review for a Eco boost and 30' TT combo posted here describing their recent trip!

Good luck !

I traded the Eco in June for a sweet deal on a Super Duty. I did not have air bags or timbrens in the Eco. I had no need in my opinion. I did add LT tires. When i dropped the pin on the truck I was level. Estimated pin weight was 1900 lbs. I had a King Ranch that killed the CCC due to options.

Going by ford today to see what 250 goes for and what my trade in is worth, I know I'm going to take a hit on it but hopefully not to severe if so I might be stuck with ecoboost. Do you know if the highway patrol truck scales will let you weigh your equipment on their scales

I think a pin weight of 1900 way exceeds any of the options for the F150. I pull a Flagstaff Super Lite 5th wheel with dry pin weight of 1100, and dry weight of 7700. Estimated full load is 8500. The rear kitchen really helps to keep the pin weight neutral when loaded. My truck only squats a couple of inches when hooked. The Ecobeast pulls the weight easily. Highest transmission temp observed in 5500 miles has been 212 when I was climbing Hwy 33 to Shenandoah National Park in VA just two weeks ago. I was chasing our friends, who had got about a mile ahead of us, as hard as I could and still manage the turns.

Here we go again..................1/2 ton brakes, 1/2 to springs oh bull...........these "1/2" ton trucks today are more capable than 3/4 ton trucks in the near past. My brother in law has been a service manager at a dealership for 30 years. He has rarely seen a failure of springs axles etc from overload condition unless very severe. You guys need to get over yourselves. I'll bet none of you are truck design engineers and you all talk like you know for sure the truck will explode the minute you put an extra pound in it. Don't you think the manufacturers know they're going to be used to the max and more??
Weight distribution and proper hitch set up and careful driving are the critical points here. I'm not advocating putting 20,000lbs behind your half ton but a few hundred pounds over isn't going to be a problem.

I towed a 9500lb loaded 5er with 1500 pin weight behind my F150 with a 5.0 engine. 9400lb max tow and 1650lb max load per the tag. It towed perfectly. not much sag and it had more than enough power and no problem with brakes. Brakes on the trailer too remember???????? Go ahead and flame me all you want. I did it and would do it again. If you're scared then don't do it.
I drive according to conditions and never exceed the tire ratings for weight or speed, that's a limiting factor. Of course you can't stop on a dime. Of course you can't accelerate like a rocket, but you shouldn't anyway. Pay attention ahead of yourself and be aware of your surroundings, that's what's critical.
I only bought my f250 because of the fabulous deal I got and it's a loaded with options Lariat and I wanted those options.
Old Coot tows pretty much the same 5er as I have with a 1/2 ton and he knows the truth too.
You weight police need to chill. Most of you couldn't pull lawn cart without being scared.

Couldn't have said it better myself aquaholic3.
If you may have noticed, it's the guys with the 1 ton trucks that keep hammering us in our 1/2 ton trucks the most.
I guess to each their own. I'm perfectly happy with my truck and 5th. wheel combo.
