Ease of installation. Positive drive engagement.

Robertson screws are pretty much the norm up here in Canada... Why they never really caught on in the US remains a mystery to me.

Easy of installation, especially with power drivers, would likely be why FR went that way, I'm guessing.

From Wikipedia-

Robertson screwdrivers are easy to use one-handed, because the tapered socket tends to retain the screw, even if it is shaken.[31] They also allow for the use of angled screw drivers and trim head screws. The socket-headed Robertson screws are self-centering, reduce cam out, stop a power tool when set, and can be removed if painted over or old and rusty.[31] In industry, they speed up production and reduce product damage.[31]

Their use is very common in Jayco and StarCraft trailer for the reasons cited above.

Cheers

Square screws are actually a Canadian invention and are called "Robertson drive" and they were first patented in 1909 in canada. They are far superior to phillips or standard slotted head and have now taken over a lot of the industry in the US as well. Most standard driver sets already include Robertson tips and they are fantastic since they seldom strip out and every driver is a screw started since the screw will remain on the slightly tapered tip when driving.

I've been using them for 20 years and used to have to buy them in Canada in bring them home. Today you can get them anywhere.

They have been pretty standard on RVS for decades.
Our 1970 Starcraft popup had them.
