Fort De Soto Park, St. Petersburg, FL

Has anyone stayed there? Opinions would be appreciated.

Hi, stayed there many times. Very nice campground. They only have water and electric sites, no sewer. 14 day max stay. No WiFi and cell service is shetchy. Very good access to the gulf. They have sites along a sea wall where one can dock a boat. Ft. Desoto beaches are some of the best in the area. Lots of trees in the campground so much so that you will need to be careful backing on some sites. Clean comfort stations but they are not air conditioned. Very hot in the summer. All in all it's a wonderful place to stay.

We love Fort DeSoto. Camp there every year during Memorial Day week. There are tolls to pay in and out of the island the park is on. If you get there during prime beach time, be prepared to wait...and wait to get through the toll booths. (Sunpass is accepted).
We always book a seawall site in the pet loop. Easy to kayak right from our site.
The dog beach and Fort you must drive or bike to. One of the best off leash dog beaches in Florida. You can do half or day trips on the ferry to Egmont key.
Nice shaded spots - their website is helpful and pretty accurate in the site sizes. Level sites. Agree that cell service is lacking, which makes it a nice change from always being connected.
Beautifil sunsets right from your site.

Desoto

If you camp, you will be 10 minutes away from Gulfport, directly across Boca Ciega Bay... Lots of great restaurants, beachside bars and shops...kind of like the way Key West used to be...we keep our sailboat there...worth a visit...oh, and don't forget to stop in at the Don Cesar hotel and try one of their mojitos!

Here are a few photos that I could easily find - we have more if you need. Most are of the sunset from our campsite. The kayak pic is Shell Island which is a nice half day trip in the kayak. Manatee and jumping rays all over the place when we go in May.
