Freezer and Frig temp averages

I have the basic Dometic LP/Electric frig/freezer unit in our Wildcat.

I am wondering what your average temp runs in each on your unit? Is there an average or does the range vary greatly.

I just checked ours, it's been on for approx. 24 hours. Our outside temps are extremely low right now in the mid 80s with very high humidity right now.

The frig was at 38 and the freezer at 32 degrees.

I just raised the cooling sensor to see what I can get it down to. It is currently on Electric power.

Thanks for your impute.

We have a Dometic RM2351 that gets down to -2 in the freezer and 30 in the refrigerator on electric. When on gas though, it is mid 30's in the freezer and mid to upper 50's on propane.

Our fridge stays around 29-32F on electric, about 32-35 on propane when traveling. Never checked the freezer but the ice cream gets pretty hard.☺

I remember a camper from the 90's I had seemed to stay colder on gas. But my slightly newer unit seems to run colder on electric. So I think it's model dependent.

On Electric
Fridge = 32º - 36º
Freezer = 3º - 9º
On Gas
Fridge = 34º - 38º
Freezer = 4º - 10º

These temps have been taken during 90º+ outside temps and with the A/C both on and off in the RV, over a period of several weeks.

I seem to average 34-36 in the fridge and 10-0 in the freezer whether I'm on gas or electric and whether it is the winter in Nashville or summer in Southeast Texas. Nice and consistent for now. Of course, I limit how often I open the unit and I'll sometimes run an air circulator in the fridge in the summer.

Something else to consider.......is your fridge in a slide out? If so, you have side ports outside for the heat to escape. It's harder for the system when you have that type. I live in central Texas and mine is in a slide. I added another condenser cooling fan in tandem with the original one outside and it's really helped with the cooling of the fridge in hot summer Texas. My temps are usually 4 or 6 in the freezer and 32 to 34 in the fridge.

I believe the QC is so poor in the fridge factories that different units of the same model will vary in performance. Some folks add fans, it helps some, others it's no help.

I replaced with 9 cu ft electric will add inverter soon. During replacement saw signs of impending fire in cabinet over flue, 2016 model.

I was going to start a thread on this today so your timing is great. I have been monitoring my fridge temp's on various setting at different outside temperatures. I just had the fridge checked by my dealer and they indicated it was within specs using setting 4 and on gas. Basically near 37 in fridge and 2 in freezer. I think they must be checking first thing in the morning. I have a 2015 Cedar Creek Silverback with the fridge in slide. I don't know the model of the fridge. Here is what I am experiencing in my testing of the fridge (not freezer) while the RV is parked under a protective cover and using electricity:

57 deg on setting 3 with outside temp high 90’s
45 deg on setting 3 with outside temp low 80’s

50 deg on setting 4 with outside temp 97 degrees
37 deg on setting 4 with outside temp 63 degrees

31.5 deg on setting 5 outside temp 62 degrees
Will check again this afternoon when hot outside.

Needless to say, I do not consider this acceptable when hot outside and don't know whether I need a replacement unit or if it can be fixed.

Gas or electric should give you temps in the low 30's and single digits. Anything else? There's a problem,,,even with ambients in the 80's and 90's. Consider adding a fan to cool the condenser fins more. My temps were in the 40's and 50's and freezer in the teens at best. I had an ammonia solution clog at a mild kink on my condenser line and it didn't manifest itself until the thermal switch stayed open and overheated everything. That was a fun time figuring that one out. But I tapped the kink with a hammer several times,,,knowing there was a restriction since it was hot on one side and much cooler on the downside.

We have just recently installed a temp minder in our Dometic fridge we have. We were at the Frog rally all week which was the first time we have used it since we installed it. Running on gas all week our fridge temps ranged from 31 to 44. I meant to check the freezer but forgot. Will do next time. Since the monitor is mounted on wall next to bathroom door I see it all the time. Check it out to monitor your temps. I really like it for the price and peace of mind. Will probably order a new sensor for the freezer now that I have seen it work.

This summer I added a 7inch 12 volt exhaust fan To the top vent on the back my refrigerator.. it sucks enough air over the fins and out .. circulation is everything when it comes down to in slide refrigerators. Will probably add a second one this fall.. I stay in the the low 30's and 0 most days at 4 on the setting.

Olsonm,,,,that's what was on my original unit,,,,then I added another fan and it made all the difference in this Texas heat. I know your success story, because I have the same story.
Like you,,,,my fridge stays in the low 30's...and freezer at 4-6 degrees....even on 100 degree days. Sometimes I have mild ice crystals in my water. Just like I like it.

Ours was all over the board, mainly depending on outside temp. Usually fridge would run 36-49° and freezer 12-30°. I added three fans behind the fridge which did help.

We got tired of having soft ice cream and high fridge temps when it was +95° outside. Just installed a new residential fridge and loving it. Someone gave us $700 for our 2015 Dometic so we made a profit as new fridge was $299.

Does anyone care to share a few photos and how to do information on adding a fan or two to the back of the unit?

Thanks
Jon

Yes, I would also be interested in pictures on installing extra fans. Thanks everyone.

I struggle to keep our refrigerator at or below 40 degrees... (we have the DM2652 in the slide).
I've move the slide with the probe on the fin to the coolest setting (however the cord on the probe doesn't seem long enough to reach quite to the top), I added a small battery operated fan to help with circulation.
In the past week the lowest I was able to get the temp in the refrigerator was 35 (freezer 11) and that was over night. Once the sun comes out and/or the temps start rising it's a loosing battle. I continually rotate frozen bottles of water from the freezer to the refrigerator daily to help keep it cooler, but that's the best I've seen. We are looking at adding additional fans as well...

If you will follow the cord to the probe down to where it comes thought the back wall of the frig you can pull some additional cord through the seal and allow you to move the temp probe higher on the fin.

I (to some extent) tried to pull it out further, but was hesitant to yank on it too hard and end up with it in my hand... 😱 we're going out again this weekend, I'll try giving it another firm yet gentle tug 😬
