Fresh Water Between Trips?
What do I do with the fresh water tank between trips in my tt...keep it full, empty or what? The dealer filled it and I brought it home full but we likely won't use it for a month or so.
I'm guessing I should empty my grey water tanks and leave a little in the black water tank to keep things from drying up. Its my first tt, so any guidance is appreciated.
Thanks!

I've always been of the school that water in fresh tank is good for about two weeks. When I'm going on a trip I fill it with fresh water the day before.
I always leave water in the grey and black tanks. After emptying I put a few gallons in.

We ALWAYS fill the FW tank before we leave.
And drain it when we get home.

Interesting, I didn't expect to hear that people prefer to travel with a full tank. Guess its easier than trying to fill up at the campground.

You never know what the water quality will be like at a campground. If your water quality at home is good it might be beneficial to bring it with you. We often have lunch in the trailer while traveling. Water comes in handy for dish washing and bathroom use. I always drain the freshwater tank before a trip and add new water.

The one thing that you DO NOT want to do is leave a load in the black tank during storage. In the summer.
Don't ask - Just believe!

I normally fill our fresh water tank with hot water before heading out because I know it will be the best water of the entire trip. Especially taking that first shower!

If the water has clorine it will start smelling in 4 or 5 weeks.

We are mostly weekend State Park campers. Now, we always fill up at home before we leave. Water at the State Parks is usually Well Water... and sometimes less than appetizing. We've found our filter and Anode rod last several YEARS, too.. versus one season - when we were using Well water from the parks.
Also - as we're filling the FW tank, I've got the outside spigot open for the HOT water to 'flush' the Hot water heater & make sure I have more fresh than non-fresh water in there. No bad egg smell this way.
Always empty the FW tank at the end of the trip.

You'll find people have varying opinions on travelling with a full FW tank. I pulled into a campground last summer and the township had a broken water-main and no water at the park for 2 days........I was glad I had a tank full.

We travel with approx. 1/3 tank, for those moments when you just have to pull over. When we leave the dry camping spot the water drain is opened and drains as we go along the trail getting out of the forest and the highway. When heading for dry camping the water tank is filled and so is the aux 50 gal tank.

Here in Suffolk County, NY, we have EXCELLENT public water. I always leave with a full tank of fresh water. My first RV (a 2010 Casita Spirit Deluxe Travel Trailer) had a 25 gallon fresh water tank. My current RV (2015 Dynamax DX3-37RB Super C Class) has a 110 gallon fresh water tank. I also try to fill my fresh water tank long before I get to FL (some of the foulest smelling water I've had the misfortune to encounter).

I fill my FW tank before leaving home. If i get into questionable water on the toad. I can use it. Plus, while taking breaks on the road (non-rest stop) it nice to wash and flush.

Fill before we leave and drain when we get home. Grass always enjoys the water!

I kinda guess it will depend when the next trip is ! If you are leaving again in a week , keep it full . Ours is always filled up upon return , we spend more than 30 weekends per year dry camping at some festival or craft show as we are vendors . North Florida well water , best in the nation !

My rear kitchen TT carries 367 pounds of water next to the rear bumper. This directly affects tongue weight. I also use water while on the road.
I've never been able to completely empty the water tank so I keep it full. I have full hookup at home, so between trips I use the camper as my office and cave, so the water is continuously being cycled through. In fact, you could say I am camping from the day I de-winterize till the day I winterize. Even then, I still go out there to watch tv or just to read.

Thanks for all the info guys, it's a lot of help! I live outside of town so I have well water...with a lot of iron. I plan to get a filter so maybe that will help when filling at home. Thanks again!

I empty the water tank and blow out the lines whenever the rig goes into storage. When I leave, the tank is filled with tap water, which is known to be good quality.
City tap water is also chlorinated to prevent bacterial growth in the water lines. I take advantage of this by removing the hose filter and replacing the RV's charcoal filter with a paper filter for that first tankful. I also do the filter change whenever I fill an empty tank from a known good chlorinated city water source while travelling. We carry bottled water but most of the time use water from the tank for drinking.
Filling the tank from water sources that aren't too "hard" allows us to avoid water from areas that have high mineral content well water. I also have an electronic mineral content tester I use to check the water before putting it in the RV.

If we have something in the garage,I fiil it just before we leave. If not,Ill just put 15-20 gal in it for OTR water. The 100 gal of water offsets the wieght in a full garage and keeps our pin wieght constant.
