I'm lazy and during the season I typically just leave what ever
is in there until the next trip. The day before I'll usually open
the drain and let it run out and then refill it to 1/3.
If we're going where we know they have city water I might not
even drain it at home first.

If I know we're going dry camping I usually drain it, add some,
drain it again and then fill it for the trip.
We also sometimes take drinking water in a blue water tote-
especially the first trip of the season when the lines have recently
had anti-freeze in them.

I always leave at least a little in case I need to use the sink while parked. It is better to keep water in the system so things won't dry up.
I usually add a 1/2 cup of clorox bleech with a full tank on my first run to make sure nothing is growing inside the tank or piping. Then I dump the tank fully and add enough for the road trip time.
I usually don't drink the tank water. I'd rather drink the campground water or bottled. The rank is good for washing and flushing.

The only time I drain my tank is during the winter.
