As you go west from San Antonio the towns get far a few between. Nice camp ground in Kerrville. Buckhorn Lake Resort - Kerrville, Texas

There is a private campground in Ozona but is full all the time. It is in the southern end of the Permian Basin and there is an oil boom and there are more jobs than workers and more workers than housing.

You could jump up to I-20 but between big Spring and Pecos The RV parks are full for reasons stated above.

Nothing scary about West Texas it is just sparsely populated.

I drove for hours behind a big rig in one lane as one was closed and all I saw to the left and right was empty land, as far as the eye can see. I kept hoping I wouldn't break down since there was nothing there and the exits were few and far between. That was on Interstate 40.
