Generators at truck stops
We are already planning a trip next year to NY. I have a generator that we use around the house. It's too loud to use at campgrounds by some people's standards. My question is, would it be inconsiderate to use it at a truck stop where there is already ambient noise from other semis?

That would depend on where you park.
I would park well away from other campers that might be there and the main building.
Try to pick a spot where it would be difficult for a truck to park and use your unit to muffle the sound some what.

Many of the truck stops I have been at have the truck engines and sometimes a fridge unit running. Unless you have a REAL loud one, no one is even going to notice you.....

Have you ever seen a truckstop with a quiet zone? Same with roadside rest areas, the refrigerator trucks drive me crazy. So just add yours to the noise.

I'd run it. Parked next to an older cummins / dodge once, and it was louder than our generator. A refer truck is crazy loud compared to a typical generator. Don't think anybody would notice. I'd just make sure somebody else was louder, first, where I didn't stand out too bad.

Truckers are used to the sound of truck engines and reefer units. No way would I run a loud generator in a truck stop parking lot, knowing some of those drivers are dead tired and trying to get a nap. It's the different kind of noise that would wake them up.

I have been in lots of those truck stops. Unless your genset runs with a idling 550 HP Diesel engine or even a 30HP aux for the fridge and is louder than big rigs pulling in and out all night, NO driver will ever hear you. Obviously if you use no common sense and run the genset with the exhaust at the rigs sleep compartment you may be approached. Otherwise don't worry about it.

If you have ever parked next to a truck with the refer running, you will know it is OK to run the generator. But other than the TV, MW, or AC you shouldn't need to run a generator.

First of all I would say it would be very inconsiderate of you and all RVers to even consider parking at a truck stop simply because the truckers can't find a place to park,Use a Walmart parking lot!!!

Sadly, my camper has no *FANS*. I can't move a lick of air without shore power.

First of all, in my case, I buy fuel there and often eat there. They are MORE than happy to have me. Also some of the bigger stops even ASK RV's to stay and have special places to park. (more often out front). While Walmart supports it, it is ILLEGAL to park all night at Walmarts in some cities.... RV'ers can get just as tired as a trucker..

I found a 12V camping fan in Walmart. It can run on flashlight batteries, but I wired directly to a 12v cigar lighter plug and use it. It has 2 speeds and moves a decent amount of air. (~10in) (and is quiet).

Well you might have me beat in the number of states, but I transported race cars in rigs for close to 15 years. IMO you are quite exaggerating. BTW, All of the big rigs with Cummins, Cats, refers, etc. ALL sound different. Never met a trucker who was so highly attuned that he could tell the difference enough to wake him. I also suggest YOUR cab/sleeper was really insulated poorly. Try a newer one. (less than 20 years old  )
When sitting in the sleeper with a reefer or drive motor idling, you CANNOT even hear the truck, genset or reefer next door.
A "loud" Generac idling is not near as loud as a big Cat, Cummins, etc. And if you read the thread you will see that most agree with me and did suggest that he pick a spot of least interference..
As far as noise level I would be happy to give you some db level readings from lots of different units...
