Going from 33' to 43'

Your input is much appreciated! I have a 2017 33' Wildcat 29 RLX that i was pulling with a 2003 Ford F250. I've done a lot of traveling throughout the past year. I've become very good at backing the rig into sites. Just bought a 2017 Ford F350 SRW with the tow package and puck system. Hitch is Curt 2000.
I'm seriously considering a new Pinnacle 38 REFS (43') GVW around 17,000 lbs. I'm guessing traveling down the road will be about the same except around tight curves. I move around a lot. My question is... Am i limited on parks? is it a lot harder to back in? if not impossible. What should I expect to be different? Thanks in advance for your help!!

I tow with a Kenworth tractor with a 42' 5th wheel and not really ever been in a spot where I could not back into my site. Now if someone had their vehicle across their site and across from us yes they might have had to move it to make things a bit easier. I did drive tractor trailer for over 30 years and also did a lot of yard jockey work backing trailers into docks so I am sure that helped me improve backing skills a lot. Just slow down and take your time and when in doubt use the GOAL method....get out and look.

With that big a camper I would have got a dually to pull the camper with. You will find it’s not much more difficult to back up.

I just went to 43. Some day soon when possible I will probably be going smaller. No matter how well you can back some spots are just not made for rigs that long. I feel like I cant go anywhere ive never been in fear that im going to get my self in to a bad spot

I do love the extra storage and square footage but realistically im outside 90 percent of the time minus sleeping

I went from never towing anything to a 20’ pop-up and backing that in was more often a crap show than not.

Then I bought a 42’ fifth wheel and that often was a crap show early on. Took about a year of trips before my wife and I found a groove. We kept that rig for 6 years and I can count on one hand (and not need all of the fingers) the number of times we couldn’t get into a site due to our size.

Yes, there are some campgrounds we don’t even try. I tend to check for “big rig” friendliness. It’ll often be mentioned in reviews.

And this year, we upgraded to a 43’ 6” rig (per specs, I haven’t measured it). I’ve only had it for 3 months but have had it in 8-10 campgrounds and overnights at stores.

Personally, I love the space it affords and am willing to deal with the limitations.

Ditto....
You need a Dually for that kind of weight and will handle better on the highway and turns and downhills.

I think you will be fine with the F350 SRW. Backing into spots won't be that different.

Went from 12' popup to 30' TT....I was amazed how easy they are...the bigger they are. Now, with our 38' foot, the wife and I have ran into a couple campgrounds that requested length for reservation, as all their pads were different sizes and my neighbor with his Montana has also seen the same thing. Now I've seen people that couldn't park a trailer in an empty Walmart parking lot and I've seen people (like my son) who can backup a single axle 15' trailer 1/4 mile down the road at 30mph. I swear the kid could put a 8' wide 40' long trailer into a 7' wide 20' long spot...and it would fit fine.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY !

We went from a 30ft NorthTrails bumper pull to a 40ft Cedar Creek 36CK2 - and love it. However, the new trailer is almost too big for the state (Texas) campgrounds. We've only found a couple that will allow this big a rig. All the KOA's and private parks will fit it though, so no problem there.

As for trucks, we pull ours with a 2014 F350 SRW PowerStroke. Our truck has an 11,500lb capacity and we are at 11,800 when fully loaded - so slightly over weight. Our trailer weighs in at 13,900 lbs. So, I would think your 17,000 lb trailer would most likely put you way over weight with your SRW truck.

Here's a link to my post that shows my actual truck/trailer weights and some info on the F350.

Thanks for sharing and bringing to my attention the weight. When I looked up the Gross weight of the Ceder Creek it's around 16,500. You only put in 825 lbs of stuff?
I guess I should have never listened to the dealership when I bought the truck! I'm glad I went on here before I bought the new fiver. My rear GAWR is 230 lbs more than on your chart.
So how do you figure all of this out before you buy? Two RV dealers both asked what kind of truck I had and never said anything about it not carrying the weight.

Look there. It will tell you the tow capacity of your truck.

Depending on your options the trailer may be too heavy overall for the truck (gcvwr), too heavy on the hitch (gvwr), and or too heavy for your rear axle rating.

If you are serious about the trailer and a dealer has it in stock. Tell them you want to hook it up and go to the cat scales any dealer that doesn’t allow you to do this isn’t serious about selling it to you.

I think you will be in trouble with the SWD. My Pinnacle pin weight is 3900 to 4000 Lbs.

Length is not a problem, mine is a few " under 43'. My 5er has a gvwr of 15,200#. We load heavy and still do not come close to the 3450#CC. PW is around 2880#. 2016 F350 SRW scales fine on all numbers. After 1 dually (not so affectionately named PIA) I'd never buy a 5er that required one. At 17K you would definitely in dually territory I believe.

Ya, length and trailer weight is not a problem. For me, it's the cargo capacity. I've got the 50 gallon Titan tank vs 26gal stock tank, so that's an additional 170lbs, plus I've got the Pullrite Superglide for another 250lbs+. So I've got over 400lbs of my cargo capacity already taken up.

What model truck do you have? I only see a couple models (2wheel drive) that have 3400+ lbs of cargo capacity.

2016 4x4 Lariat. Sticker says 11,500 and 3447. I have the B&W slider about 210# and a 20 gallon aux tank. When I bought my 1st 5er I had an F250 so I dumped the factory tailgate for an aluminum 5er gate which saved a lot of weight. Put the F350 tailgate in the box as the 5er gate is more convenient.

The number I’m after is gross combined vehicle wieght rating. This is how Ford lists towing capacity. I’m the towing guide that I linked to.
