Got Called a Racist this weekend

Camping at a State Park, been there 7 years in a row for Memorial Day weekend. Five other families, all in adjoining campsites. My site was waterfront on a lake. Some folks a few sites up kept walking through our site to get to their jetskis. There was a trail they could use to get to the water, but it was easier for them to march through like they owned the place.

This went on all day - I finally asked them to stop. Long story short, they called me an F***n racist b****d and accused my wife of "cussing" out one of them..she is a Stephen Minister and teaches preschool at a church; and never said a word to them.

I should have gotten the Host, but after the yelling back and forth, they did not go through our campsite again either...

Pretty much took the wind out of my sail for the weekend...

Thoughts?

Sadly that is the world we live in today! It sucks but I really don't know of much one person can do to change it other than pretend it's 1980 again and make yourself aware and show people respect that they have not seen in a long long time.

For instance, there is a gas station in the middle of the hood near my work place. I went in the store the other day and held the door open for a black person and he about fell out! As I was leaving, he went out of his way to open the door for me!!! If we all attempt to show others that it can still be done, just maybe they will start doing the same.

I too would have been upset with the jet skiers you were dealing with. My only thought/hope is that a polite conversation with them leading into not walking through your campsite MIGHT have helped? Who knows.

If we all start doing stupid little things like this, maybe it will catch on and someday we can see things turn back for the better. At this point and time I am willing to try anything....

Unfortunately this is the society we live in today. There are a lot of good people out there but the bad apples make a good situation bad. I am 61 years old and was raised to respect others. It is a shame that it ruined your weekend. Keep camping.

save yourself the aggrevation and store 2 of these in your unit:

Economy Folding Wire Border Fence | Canadian Tire

These are easy to stick in and out of the ground, they take very little space.

Oh, this is my 4th and final attempt at posting here, you wouldn't of liked my other 3,

There just ain't no respect.

I probably would have liked your previous 3 responses even better as they would be closer to mine but ~~~ I would prefer a little razor wire on top of that fence to really get the message out.

Not a bad thing being called a racist today as only a racist would call me one ~~ but hey obama calls me and other veterans terrorists so who cares?

I'm going to guess they were younger folks, early 20's or so.

Ha, I've written two different responses... Better leave this one be..

Mission accomplished.... They stopped walking through your site.

Take the high road. Forget it and enjoy yourself.

That's to bad there are some very rude people around us daily. I'm glad you got it straighten out. Why did they call you a racist if I may ask? There are still some good people out and around. I was pulled over on highway #103 this past weekend and to my surprize 3 different people stopped and asked If I needed help. I said no I'm fine but Thank-You very much. Seems through you always run into some rude ones when camping. Me I would never think about walking through someones CG. But I'm 68 and was taught manners....

There is an old proverb that "good fences make good neighbors."

Benjamin Franklin also once said to "love your neighbor, but don't yank out your hedge."

Who Said "Good Fences Make Good Neighbors"?

Our sense of "space" (or territory) defines us as a species from the beginning of our awareness of self. While homo-sapiens are social beings, they are fiercely territorial. Some branches of our tree are comfortable with less (like the Japanese for example), and some require more. Folks who live in the wide open spaces of the American West know what I am talking about when jammed into an elevator in New York.

This concept of defending "our space" leads directly to our hard wired need to defend our property as well (since by definition they are IN our space).

The opening scene from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" depicts the entire concept very well. No amount of social engineering will eliminate the need for personal space and no amount of wishful thinking will eliminate our need to defend "our stuff". RULES (laws) are made by humans to allow larger groups of humans to coexist peacefully.

When aggression against the rule of law, (and we rule keepers), becomes common place, the breakdown of who we aspire to be becomes blurred by who we were from the dawn of time.

The "rule" about cutting through another's campsite is unwritten, but is based upon the respect of one family group's space as you would want that family group to respect yours.

I am not surprised the confrontation became heated, because defense against aggression is a natural response. Just be glad you did not need to use a jawbone to send them packing!

I'm a mallard duck. I fly with mallards. Pintail can light on my pond and eat my acorns though.

Folks misuse words these days. Big difference in racist and being racial.

A few months ago during all the uproar over the confederate flag I pulled into Sears and lady called me a racist. She said that flag on my license plate proved it. Well, the flag was red and white scuba diving flag. I tried to explain to her what the flag stood for but she won’t quit yelling four letter words at me. When I came back out of Sears my plate was bent and scratches on my truck.
