GPS for RV

Is there a certain GPS specifically for RV that will make sure you don't go on roads with low bridges or things like that? We are picking up a Sunseeker and I don't believe it has one.

Its called a driver. Nothing takes the place of being aware of ones surroundings!

There are several available options, but It's still safest to cross reference you're route on one of those with Rand McNally's Trucker's Road Atlas and Google Earth just to be sure. GPS are wonderful creations, but will still put you in a place you don't want to be from time to time. The last thing you ever want is to be sent blindly down a road you don't have clearance along and then end up with no where to turn around.

Book maps, Google Earth with street view are all great tools to use. Being aware while driving also helps. Point being in Jersey and Pa, both have bridges over major highways that have low clearance at the road shoulder.

As mentioned above you need to double check your route whichever GPS you go with.

Having said that, Garmin makes some pretty good RV and trucker GPS units, So does Magellan. Pick the one you like and use it along with checking the route it chooses with Google Earth and another source of low overhead data.

Also, it's important to actually measure the height of your RV to the tallest point and add a couple of inches. Then use that as your rig height setting.

Nothing is foolproof.

Many R/V designated GPS have inputs for low overhead and there are some POI (points of interest) files available to load in other GPS devices. But again, it is the operators responsibility to plan & watch.

Low Clearance POI - GPS Data

I too use paper maps and do advance planning where I want to travel to. I also have a Rand McNally GPS that you insert your trailer parameters into and can switch between car and RV. I am on my second unit, my first one lasted about 6 years before it stop working. When I purchased my unit I also purchased Life Time Map updates for the GPS, I update about four times a year.

My Sunseeker came with GPS built into the radio, it is almost useless. I use a Rand McNally RVND7 (it has input for rv data) and a Rand McNally Truckers Atlas. As Jim34RL said, I do advanced planning.

I also have a Rand McNally RVND 7 GPS/tablet...

The tablet...pretty much non-functional and slow...

But as a GPS device...so far so good!

Way better than all the other GPS devices I've purchased in the past...
