Great Sand Dunes National Park Availability

Planning a short stay at the Great Sand Dunes National Park around the 18th of April I noticed that during this period the National Park campground (Pinon Flats) only has "walkup availability". No reservable sites. Wondering if anyone has any comment about the chances of getting a site for a late afternoon arrival?

We stayed there September 23, 2013 which was a Sunday night. We did not have any problems finding a spot then. As I recall we got there about mid afternoon. In fact by Sunday evening it was pretty deserted. I see April 18th is a Saturday so it might be busier however it is still early in the season. Hope this helps a little.

I doubt that it would fill that early in the season but if it should there is a Colorado state park very close by (Colorado Parks & Wildlife - San Luis).
