I'm retiring in June, 62.5, and will take cobra for the 18 months. 625 for health, hdp, 1300 deductible a year.but that also covers vision and dental.

I have retained my city insurance by paying full cost as wife has multiple health problems. Received a notice premiums are going up and we cost me over $14,000 this year. If not for wife's health problems I would look at catastrophic plans and cover routine treatment out of pocket.
Had the identical problem with our municipal health insurance plan. The municipality was "self insured". We also had a preexisting condition. But when the annual premiums exceeded $12,000/years and the med and RX co-pays went up as well, it became unaffordable. I determined that there is virtually no regulation on "self insured" entities. At age 62, it was determined that the preexisting condition qualified as a disability and was able to get insurance under Medicare.

Two separate things. Very separate.

Health CARE is not broken. I am alive by modern Health Care.

Health INSURANCE is broken, mostly because of the high cost of a myriad of new techniques, drugs, procedures, and tests.......all of which help someone. It's not free, and no system can make it free. If I go to school, sometimes 24 X 7, until I'm 30 years old, I expect a danged good compensation after that. And I'm tickled with the research that gives us quality new drugs that save lives and benefit us. Paying for it is going to cost us dearly, more and more. Nothing can stop that.
Actually, health care is as broken as is the insurance. Health care fraud is rampant, but almost nil in prosecution. It is at a point of too big to prosecute. Maybe a fine here and there. And it is difficult to understand how a multitude of 150 year olds are still receiving treatment, along with Meidcre and SS benefits.

All doctors are not created equal. We visited one doctor four time related to a medication affecting major body organs. On the last visit, the doctor still had not researched for a solution. The next doctor made the med change on the first visit. Are the doctors not making a determination over several visits inept or are they playing the system? Rest assured, we will not let them play with our health.

You Have to watch out for your own heath. They are just legal drug dealers good or bad for you. You need to make sure what is good for you.

United Healthcare CEO Stephen J. Hemsley, who stepped down in August 2017 was earning $2,628,000,000 /year. That breaks down to $5000 dollars a minute. Now you know one of the reasons healthcare costs so much. Over half of the money goes to the bosses. They say they want to keep costs down but you won't see any of them taking a cut in pay.

I'm sorry. I still say Health CARE is not the same as Health INSURANCE. Insurance pays for health care.

And I know there are doctors that are not good. But there are many that are good, and I'm alive because of them, and because of the very expensive new medicines and procedures. And I'm glad we have easy access to all of it, and don't have to wait months for simple things. It's not perfect, and I'd change many things, but I am glad we have what we have.

Cobra for Near Retirees

I believe Cobra rules are the same everywhere and here's one I uncovered awhile back.

At age 65.5 I volunteered to be laid off a few years ago. That route allowed my wife to qualify for spouse Cobra and she was offered the normal 18 months. In deciding whether to take it or not, I read the fine print and the rules say that at the time of exit if the Spouse and the qualifying employee are divorced OR if the qualifying employee is on Medicare, then the Spouse can get 36 months of Cobra instead of just 18. We are happily married, but I was (and am still) on Medicare.

It took a few calls to educate the HR folks on the rules, but eventually she got her 36 months Cobra. This was important because she doesn't work and is several years away from qualifying for her own Medicare.

Lastly, Cobra is expensive when you compare it to what the employee was paying before. Basically, with Cobra you pay your share PLUS the employer share PLUS 10%. Guess what? That's still better and cheaper than the Obamacare we had hoped to get (long story, already covered in this thread).

So bottom line. If you or your spouse are on Medicare, be sure to check out the secret 36month Cobra option.,

I think you might have an extra ,000 in your salary total. I doubt that he was earning $2.628 billion/year. Maybe $2.628 million?
Either way, insane high healthcare prices in the US. You can thank Washington!
