We use a 2" on our bunk and a 1" on one of the other bunks. I camped this last September in 42 degree weather and turning it on to the highest setting of 6 soon had me broiling. I also have the heater turned up to 65 and I was in a mid-weight sleeping bag.
I found that a combination of 60 degrees with the heater and 2-3 with the mattresses and bag worked well; even through the 2" memory foam.
But that's personal and you'll find our what works well for you.
Hint: Turn them on an hour or two before you go to bed.
