Heated water question

I'm a new travel trailer owner. 2016 Shasta Airflyte. Question : Does water need to be in the fresh water tank in order to receive hot water or will you still get hot water if only the city water connection is hooked up and fresh water is empty ? Or does both need to be filled in order to receive a decent amount of hot water ?

No, the holding tank does not have to have water in it. Shore water is connected in parallel with the holding tank on the output side of the water pump (not needed with shore water). Open a faucet hot water side so the air in the water heater will expel allowing it to fill. If your water heater (WH) is propane and electric capable do not run it on electric without water in the WH. Just don't have your water heater bypass valves (for winterizing if you have them) in the bypass position. Hope this helps.

On a side note, be very careful not to turn on the water heater unless there is water in it. You can destroy the heating element.

Here's a generic plumbing pic, with several variations of pump suction and hot water heater valving. Hope it helps.
