Help with Surge Protector
My husband and I are new to fifth wheels. We bought are first fifth wheel in November, and it is being stored at the dealers until spring. I know that we need a surge protector, but with so many on the market I am not sure which one is the best, so I have turned to the experts on this forum. Which surge protector do you use for your fifth wheel? Which surge protector would you recommend that we buy for our 2011 Palomino Puma fifth wheel? Thanks in advance for any advice that you can give us.

You can get one of these.
Then you will know if it's hooked up right. A surge protector is a lot of money if you want one for your RV. I personally will not get one for now just cause I will not do enough camping this year for the money I spend. If anything plug a radio in first to see if anything happens then the RV.

You can get them from cheap ($50) to expensive ($400-600). A lot of people will say no need, however they are like any other insurance product you purchase. You dont need it until its needed. If you dont have one and a incident happens, its too late. Do research on the net about the various types/styles and how each works. Some act as a surge protector others raise/lower voltage, make sure no ground faults and act as a surge protector. Progressive Industries are used by many RVers.

A short in the 30 amp receptacle in the pedastal would have fried my unit, but my Progressive Industries EMS30 shut down power to the trailer immediately. Was able to plug in to the 20 amp for rest of the night until the campgound replaced the 30amp receptacle the following day. The electrician was surprised (even with the EMS30) that we had no damage to the TT.
You don't need it until you need it.

I can tell you from experience that if you don't get some protection your crazy. I was in Myrtle Beach and plugged into the pedastal and fried my converter. Luck has it that was all. The guy on the next site then told me that was why he moved was because the power was bad on that site. I now check the power before plugging in and have a protector on all the time. It took me a week to get the converter fixed and a lot of headaches. Plus listening to my spouse for that week. So stay ahead of the game and protect yourself, it's well worth the money.

Sorry, it reminded me of an old joke.
"But Doc that is not possible! I've done it hundred's of times and never gotten pregnant before!"
It just takes one bad second to ruin your entire day.
I thought you were joking about the "I don't do enough camping to justify it" comment. If you took offense, I am sorry.

Thanks everybody for helping out a newbie. Big bird you asked, "Why do I think I need one"? Because our dealer said we needed one. Since we are new to fifth wheels, we took his word that we needed one. Why do I have the feeling that it's going to be a steep learning curve. LOL.

Piggy backing on this thread!
We didn't use one with our B+ but I think it's a wise investment and will use one with the new MH.
I've looked at Progressive Industries SSP30 Smart Surge which is about $100 on Amazon:
Am I right in thinking it plugs into the pedastal and the power cord into it? What's that little pigtail thingy?
Will it do the job?

herk7769, from your recent posts I know you have been doing quite a bit of dry camping however I wanted to ask you how is your Frank's Voltage Booster ( Voltage Booster) working out? I already have a surge suppressor however I'm still interested in what a device like this offers. Thanks

Karen that is how they are used. With all the high value electronics in the new campers; they went from expensive "eye candy" to mandatory options.

Got it for Christmas and to tell you the truth I have only needed it once so far on this trip. We have stayed at 9 different campgrounds to date on this junket. Only two of them were commercial campgrounds with full hookups; one a KOA (Clewiston) and one a "Good Sam" resort outside Miami (no names). The rest were military bases 2 were dry camping (about a month now) on the generator and 5 had full hookups.
The only one we needed (and I do mean needed) the Franks was at the Miami resort where the AC to the camper was 104 volts. The boost went on perfectly and at 120 VAC our AC did not miss a beat.
