Hot water heater

Newbie question. Do I have to have the breaker on in addition to turning on the switch located on the panel to run the hot water heater??

Howdy CaptainJohn, do you have the Suburban brand water heater? If so, this may help:

Also do, you just have one switch on the panel or is there an electric and propane switch?

The circuit breaker only controls the 120 volt AC electric side of a water heater, as explained in the link above

If we're talking about heating water with electricity, then yes the breaker needs to be on.....the switch on at the panel ......AND the switch located outside behind the door at your water heater. This one is illusive as mine had silver tape on it making it difficult to see with the silver tank behind it.

You may want to keep a plastic ball point pen inside the door of the Suburban Water Heater to (Reach the Rocker Switch) behind the propane line! Unless you have Fingers like ET! Youroo!!
