How close can you get to a bear?

Bear & Man... Face to Face! {ORIGINAL VIDEO} - YouTube

The video producer's comment at the end pretty much sums it up.

We saw one on our recent trip to the Great Smoky Mountains--but we weren't that close!

Once while on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, I stopped, with a lot of others, to watch a small bear eating berries along the road. I was within 5' to take pictures. After a minute, I thought "this is really stupid, everyone else looks like they can run faster than me!" I left.

We were about 20 yards from these four. Wouldn't want to be much closer. They can move faster than you when they want to.

We had one in our yard one time tearing into a garbage bag that was inside a big garbage can. My wife grabbed the video camera and I grabbed a big stick and we went out on the deck to watch it, but we stayed pretty far away.
Normally our dogs, a husky and a hound dog, would go berserk if a squirrel, a raccoon, a herd of deer, or an opossum was in the yard. When the bear was there they simply looked at me like "so what are you going to do about that?"

Wife and I would like to section hike portions of the Appalachian Trail...my biggest challenge is getting over the chance encounter with bears and other curious animals while tenting at night!

Depends on if I think I can outrun any of the people standing by me.

In the 3rd picture, I realized that maybe I was pushing my luck. She looked dead at me and licked her chops. I snapped that last picture and got the hell out of there.

We have bears in our yard many times along with other wildlife. The bears have climbed our trees and I give them there space. The cubs are fun to watch, but just watch out for mama. They are just as much afraid of us as we are afraid of them.
