I agree, here is a picture behind our home up on the other side of the hill. We came too close to losing everything. All started by lightning, Sept 9th, 2015.
And kern county fire video

We decided last second to build a fire and roast some hot dogs this past Sunday. We were at my in-laws trailer and all the wood and fire building "stuff" was at our trailer.
My FIL had an old, rotten wooden box that he wanted to get rid of anyway, so we broke that up and threw it in with a bunch of sticks and twigs that we gathered up. Then I just took some old newspaper and stuffed it in a number of places.
It had just rained two days prior so most of the wood was still damp. After lighting the newspaper in a dozen different places and squirting a little charcoal fluid, we finally got it going.
Not how we normally build a fire but we figured if we threw enough crap in and lit it, something would eventually catch.

I use the duraflame starters and 4 pieces of split wood. I put one piece of wood in my fire pit close to one side, place the fire starter on the inside of that piece, light it and then set the other 3 pieces at a 90 degree angle to the first piece on top of the first piece so that the lit fire starter is under them. Works every time for me.

Member's form is fine - the statement is matter of fact. We too spent weeks earlier in the summer clogged with smoke. Too close for comfort. Locally we received thousands of fire ravaged refugees until the fires could be brought under control in northern Saskabush. Many of those fine people lost everything...
I digress...
Thread is three months on and 166 posts. There can't be anyone left on the forum that does not yet know how to build a fire. Is there...?

Sorry, I started it all. I have many ideas now, but practice makes perfect. I have to try them all out!

I place 2 logs down, then two logs across the top of them perpendicular. Then is shove some paper or cardboard in the center and soak with kiki oil. The oil unlike gas doesn't have flammable fumes to blow up in your face. After the fluid soaks for about 10-20 seconds I light it. If you have small kindling or fallen dead branches, set them on top of the stack and they'll help keep things going but you should be good.

this thing will make you go from wood to fire in 60 seconds, Propane Torch with Push Button Igniter
my wife won't let me use it anymore it's like a mini flame thrower and it scares her.

I'd be careful with that plan. Some of the suggestions in the thread verge on pyromania.

I didn't read every post, so maybe this has already been stated, but my wife saves the empty toilet paper roll. Fills that with lint from the dryer screen.
We keep a dozen or so of those in the rig, throw some twigs on top of one of those, light it, then progressively add larger pieces of wood.

Some really great contributions. I'm going to use a few for the house fireplace too. I use way too much newspaper trying to get that fire going.

When not in a rush and everything is dry, I build a tee pee style fire as my gorl friend is more of a traditionalist for the outdoors. When in a rush, I break out the can of diesel as someone else suggested after placing some smaller wood and some bigger stuff in a pile. Another thing that works well and nobody mentioned it is used cooking oil. I save the oil from the deep fryer and pour it on the fire to get it going and also a good way to get rid of it as it is hard to dispose of otherwise.
As for my fire pit, I have a nice big stainless steel tub from a front load Maytag washer (I service them for a living) placed on top of a big old truck rim. The tub has lots of air holes to feed the fire and being up a bit off the ground throws out the heat better. I have had the thing about three quarters full of coals under the fire and the tub glowing red and the next day I can throw a couple more chunks on and have a roaring fire again in no time. There are enough coal that you could roast something nice on there but I have a Big Green Egg for doing the cooking. Yum.

We went to a "Pioneer Days" festival this past weekend. There were people dressed up in pioneer clothing, making things out of wood, lots of animal skins, hatchet throwers, etc...
At one of the booths they were giving people the opportunity to try and start a fire using flint and steel. I stood and watched a couple of girls try it for a few minutes. They were creating plenty of sparks, but couldn't get anything to actually light.
Made me appreciate having a few of these around:
