How long will 2 tanks(Rockwood mini lite 2504s)at in 40 degree weather

Doing some winter camping Maryland down to Florida late Nov-early Dec. How long will my 2 propane tanks last if we keep the heat around 65-68? Is it a good idea to get a small electric heater(1500 watts)? We will take our time getting to Florida, with good week to 10 days in the Maryland(5 days), Virginia and Carolina areas.Thanks - this forum rocks!

We use electric whenever available. This is usually not difficult when we are moving to our final destination and staying at State parks. Refilling propane tanks is not as difficult as one would think. On our recent trip up the East coast we carried only one cylinder and refilled a couple of times over 4 weeks (heating water consumes a good bit of propane).

We have 10 cm of snow coming tomorrow. We are camping next weekend in this. Just use fireplace and furnace. Propane costs $18 for 30 lbs, not really that much. We can run 4-5 days at 32 D F on one 30 lb tank for heat/stove/BBQ/Hot water heater.

Probably about what B and B said: 4 to 5 days per tank. TT's have better insulation these days it seems. We would run an entire month plus on a single 100 lb bottle in the winter in Colorado, so a 30 lb tank should go 5 days +/- for you.

Do not do the resistant heaters go with ceramic ones.....they put out a lot of heat and are safe you can lay toilet paper on them and it won't catch fire plus they have blowers in them and are quiet and have tip over switches and won't burn a small hand or pet. I was impressed with how much heat you get out of a small cube. Plus you can get them at Walmart/ Lowes/ and Home depot etc.....I hate the smell of a propane heater plus the noise it makes....

First of all, do you have 20 lb or 30 lb tanks. We winter camp up here on Vancouver Island. If you are going propane alone you will go through a 20 lb tank pretty damn fast. Far and away the best option is buying a small electric heater. If you do not have power and are running your furnace you will be lucky to make through the first nite. We purchased a Dimplex fireplace. It is the Cat's Pyjamas. Very low electric draw, gives a very nice simulated flame to watch in your cozy trailer and throws medium and high heat. Look for a stove shop that sells dimplex in your area. They have a very good rep for lasting long and workmanship.

We just returned from 8 days in the mountains with over night temps in the low 30 and daytime around 45-50

Went thru a 20 pound in 5 days and that was with a ceramic heater as well but then DW likes it very warm.

Actually do it the other way around. If you have electric heat use it and set the furnace around say 60 to 65 degrees. Why heat with propane if you are already paying for electric? I am using this one and am quite pleased with it so far.

It has a thermostat and on auto runs till it reaches the set point, then the fan goes to low and keeps the air circulating. When it cools down a little the heat comes back on and the fan goes to high again. It is small so sits on my kitchen counter and is quiet. It is windy and 51 degrees out and is keeping my trailer at 72 right now with no problem at all.

I always use an electric heater in addition to the electric fireplace. I bought a NOCO GCP1 120V power inlet and installed it in the side of the end of the slide near the 30A inlet just for the extra heater. The furnace is set to come on only if the electric heaters can't keep up (and it did a few times last week where I was camping with only 15A outlets and it went into the mid 30's overnight).

Last year I found (2) Vornado Vortex heaters on clearance at BB&B. They have a 750W setting so that I can run (1) near the master & (1) near the kids' bunk area without overloading a circuit. They have thermostats & tip-over protection and run VERY quiet. The fan blade technology pushes more air than cheapo units without being so noisy...

When heating with electric I set the TT's propane heater to 60, just in-case electric fails at night. I also leave the TT's fan on so that warm air circulates through the vents. This has kept our water lines from freezing when the nights dip into freezing temps...

Fireplace and electric blankets help a bunch. But size of the tanks is a major factor as well. Our 35' has tanks that hold 7 lbs of pp. in cooler weather (30-55') a tank lasts a week or more. I leave 1 tank off & switch when the other is empty. That is usually about
3 am.
Campers World near us has a 20% discount on Tuesday & Wednesday with a Good Sam card. That works out to $13 to $16 per tank.

Get a ceramic heater and use it. Use the electric your paying for and save $$ on propane your not using.

great forum...this is our first fall camping experience with our WJ and early morning temps last week were low 40s high 30s.

aceinspp: I'm moving to GA.... $18 /20# & $27/30# and we carry 2 30# tanks in our WJ.

stufremont: I agree with the idea if you are paying for elec use it. We have a 1500W ceramic heater we use in the evening (living rm area) and early morning (bath rm and bedrm area). We shut the hallway doors to the bathrm & bedrm and use the elec heater in the mornings...nice to get dress when its warm. We set the furnace to 62 for the overnight to keep the chill off in the TT. One thing we did notice with the elec heater is we couldn't fire-up the elec coffee maker at the same time. We decided COFFEE first....

I would feel like I was getting ripped of if I paid $18.00 to fill a 30 lb tank. Here, in Amish country, at the Amish hardware store, I pay 30 cents a pound. That equals $9.00 to fill a completely empty 30 lb tank.
