I have designed, built, and flown RC aircraft for over 20 years, so I tend to bring something that flies when I camp. Depending on where and when we are going, I occasionally bring amateur radio gear.

Of course, there are always a few cigars tucked away, and sometimes a guitar..

camping with hobbies

We square dance so, we bring our square dance clothes with us and look for places to camp where there are nearby square dance clubs. I also call square dances so, I bring my calling equipment along just in case I get a chance to call.

Our hobbies we do together are golfing, hiking and cycling so we do those. Of course only if there is a golf course nearby which happens a lot when we camp near the ocean.

My planned camping hobbies seem to include doing something to the trailer...rarely ever gets done. I guess my only "always do" hobby is cooking/eating and relaxing.

I read someplace.. pretty sure in AR...it was forbidden to metal detect in a campground.

One trip we had some "Ford Aereostar" sized MH next to us. I though one of the people were "special" as he was walking around kinda randomly with his head down. Later I saw 2 or 3 people doing the same... I was like awwwwwe. They have lost something. I wished I had the DS metal detector.... heck naw it was at home.

When we camp we go to get away from what we do at home. Granted we eat, have cocktails and sleep, but the rest is R&R. Most of trips involve fishing, lots of fishing!, but we can't call that a hobby because Alaska Statutes say it has to be "subsistence".

Twice last year and maybe again this year. For me it's a three week trip. One each way and a week there.

For those who don't shoot there is a great RV park and all kinds of wildlife to watch and photo. Ranges are far enough away that campground isn't really disturbed.

Lots of history there with their own Ghost Town and mine.

For those that asked what I shoot, I respectfully (per forum rules) decline. I will say "nothing special and in calibers that have mostly been around for over 100 years."

Let's not get this thread shut down as I'm sure there are a lot of hobbies we haven't heard about yet and might provide ideas for those who are looking for something.

I camp at geocaching events plus FROG events. I always have my camera with me along with magazines that I never seem to have time to read at home.
Now that I'm retired, I'm working on catching up on lots of things. Haven't thought about bringing my telescope - that might be fun.

When it comes to reading, magazines aren't on my list but I did purchase a complete 17 book (so far) series by one author. Will finish #15 during next weekend's trip.
