Humming Bird Feeders

Have any of you been asked to not use humming bird feeders in public camp sites due to bear activity?

I'm a hummer fan, never considered bringing feeder with me. Have you ever had luck with them (hummers) finding the feeder in the short time one typically is at a site?

And I can see them being not allowed in bear country, wouldn't be much different than leaving a container of bird seed out in bear country, bad idea! I've been to a lot of houses where the owner left a bird feeder out, which was promptly destroyed by bear, then other property damage, as he prowled about thinking, "hmmm, what else is good to eat around here..."

That can be an issue and very sound reason for not having humming bird feeders . try the Yellowstone area lots of restrictions because of bears .

Yes, the DEC here in NY has recently put out a special warning not to leave ANYTHING out that might attract bears when camping or hiking this spring. Apparently, they didn't have a good food supply in the fall so they are ravenous coming out of hibernation.

Our hummingbird and oriole feeders have been out since the beginning of the month but haven't seen any visitors yet.

Me and DW love hummingbirds, we already have our tombstone made with hummingbirds on the stone. There is bears around here but you don’t ever want to leave food out in Yellowstone, a fed bear is a dead bear in Yellowstone. If I was staying in Pigeon Forge or Myrtle Beach for ten days I might put out a feeder but normally we don’t stay long enough in one spot to put feeders out

I was looking for the article I saw recently, but this is relevant and even has an appropriate picture. Apparently our larger than normal bear problem in NY started with the drought we had last August.

Lots on bears in NJ, but they haven't discovered my yard or feeders yet! I know they are within 1.5 miles of me though.

Scrapper, you have a ways to go before you see any in Wisconsin. Looks like they are up the the DC latitude. I'll be putting my feeders out at end of month. No sense in letting good nectar spoil if nobody's drinking it!

Yes. That's about the time hikers should consider carrying bear spray.

1.5 miles means they know where you are .lol . black bears are not so bad . have chased off quite a few in a Colorado apt complex i managed . once even from the hot tub . it's the grizzly's that you have to be careful of . West Yellowstone has plenty and you don't mess with them
