I saw this in Ohio. Is this guy really all the way from Switzerland?

I saw this RV at the dump station today, he was in line in front of me. I was at Shawnee State Park, near Portsmouth, Ohio.

It appears Eura Mobil is a european RV manufacturer - Eura Mobil: Eura Mobil (EN)

Stupid question - How would you get your vehicle over here? Ferry from Russia, maybe?

I know I can drive my car into Mexico or Canada, but can you really take a vehicle from the other side of the world and bring it to the US (or vice versa) with no registration or anything? I would think it would have to meet US crash regulations or something?

Anyway, pretty cool sighting. I wish I'd have gotten a chance to talk to them, but they were already back in the RV and waiting to leave (blocked from the front by an inconsiderate truck) by the time I noticed.

When I lived in Moab, foreign licensed RVs were spotted. I would say looking back, most were Earthroamers. How they got here? Most likely via one of the many cargo ships that offer vehicles shipping (in and outside of containers). I would guess they would need the same safety features as US vehicles (not sure about air bags), but European vehicles tend to be as safe or safer than US vehicles.

Need to get US insurance, some kind of adapters for power connections, and possibly some type of inspection at the port? Not sure, might depend on what country the port is in.

European to here is probably not a size issue, but I have heard that US to Europe can be since many roads in many European countries are narrow and possibly too narrow for many of the large RVs seen in the USA.

I know a guy who shipped his Harley to quite a few countries so he could basically ride across the world on his HD. Needless to say, he depended on freighters for most shipping, but I believe for one jump he used a cargo plane.

There are quite a few Europeans who ship their RV over here, to travel North America.
Most will travel at least 6 months to a year to make it worth the shipping costs.

this past February, I saw an RV with German international style plates, on a modified truck chassis made into an RV of sorts... It was parked in the lot near the concession area and was carrying kayaks and had a diving flag decal on the rear of the truck. I was at Manatee Springs SP near Chiefland FL where diving in the clear springs, and canoeing are great sport where the springs attach to the Suwannee River that flows close by.

I went back later to get a picture but the rig was gone and I did not see them in the campground... but there are three loops so I may have missed them.

I guess you could use a 50amp hookup for 220vac?

Although the park we were at was 30amp only at the sites.

There is more difference than voltage in European electricity. 50~ versus 60~. Motors and transformers hate low frequency power!

They were parked next to us in Cherry Hill Park Campground, College Park MD.
This was about the first week of August this year. He said they were traveling the US & leaving it here when he needed to go back home to Denmark.

Yep, saw on two seperate occasions euro type RV's. They generally are smaller with utilization of space at the top of their design. That macho unit is sure the exception. Just a good feeling to know that they want to see our great country. The ones I spoke with couldn't get over the freedom we enjoy between the individual states, and how cheap most things are compared to socialist europe (their words).

why did you not just walk up to his window and begin a conversation while waiting in line? I think you missed a golden opportunity to learn about someone from another culture!

Because I didn't notice the plate until he was pulling away.

Sorry.

There are transatlantic and transpacific roll on- roll off services for anything that will not fit in a container, Just leave your vehicle at the port and pick it up on the other side of the world!! It's not cheap but cheaper than long term rentals.

Nothing unusual. The Swiss and Germans love travelling and generally if they bring their rigs they are here for up to a year. They like Canada as it has lots of accessible widlife. All they have to do with their RV and TV if needed is to load them into containers or use a Ro-RO vesssele and get insurance and cleaning certificates and bring money. The autobahns connect to the major N Europe ports like Hamburg, Bremen or Rotterdam.

When I was picking up my 5er back in 2012, there was a couple picking up their 5er also. They were from Europe (not sure where) and came over here and bought a new fully loaded Ford dually and a new Cedar Creek to tour the US for 6mos to a year. Then they would sell it and go home. They bought the CC at Couch's in Hamilton, OH. I guess they were the cheapest.

Nice to be able to do that! DH and I spent a month twice driving and exploring France (in addition to 3 previous short trips). We stayed in small B & Bs for a week at a time, using each as a home base to drive and explore somewhere new every day. It would have been amazing to have been able to stay for an extended time, but alas, Europe is very expensive, and we had to go back to work at the end of summer.
