I think mountndream is on the right track of the original problem posted. Tanks are shipped empty are they not? dealer is responsible for filling. I could see a dealer skimping on propane to save a few bucks.

We have a 42’ 5er, with two 30 lb LP tanks. In Ohio winters, generally with temperature in the teens, we would get about 10 days on the tanks.
The are so many variables in the usage rate of gas, inside and outside temperatures, wind (no not wind chill, that only affects animals, wind on structures effects the conduction and radiation of heat), furnace size, RV size, how it’s insulated, phase of the moon, etc., that trying to compare usage between RVs I saw almost impossible.

Dealer should have filled tanks. Many dealers are cheap. Good chance you were shorted. It is your rig. In order to avoid unpleasant situations, you need to check these kind of things. Remember to check tire pressure too.

I believe propane tanks can only be filled to 80% !!!
That is where they stop with our 500 gallon tank !!!

New/trade-in tanks are only 75% full...it's much better to just get them refilled! Last much longer & well worth the hassle and saves $$$

You are most likely confusing the total weight of a filled with propane cylinder (30 pounds of propane + 25 pounds of the cylinder itself)...as opposed to just 15 pounds of propane only in an exchange cylinder (net propane total without the weight of the cylinder itself)

Yes, most exchanges only put 15 pounds of propane into a cylinder designed to hold 20 pounds of propane..or 75% filled as you stated.
All of this is explained in this FAQ link that may help:

I always go to places that charges by the gallon, 30# tank usually takes 7.2 gal. At least you only pay for what they put in. Also I find that Tractor Supply is almost always at least $1.00 cheaper than anyone else nearby.

X2 on Tractor Supply. If I had a leak the only way I would find the leaks is if the propane ran out early as I can’t smell leaking propane gas

Electric heaters & built in electric fire places are extremely helpful keeping LP usage down.
If camping, the camp site cost covers the electric bill !!!

Umm, yeah, if the campground covers the electric bill.
The campground where our Cherokee permanently is stationed meters the electricity. When our converter started to flake out and couldn't provide enough current to run the furnace, we ran two of those 1500 watt oil-filled radiators for five days, sometimes both on, and sometimes one on 1500 and one on 600. And our usual $7.00 electric bill was $78.00. Propane, using the tanks I port from Costco would surely have been less expensive.

I like the way you think. I have been putting on my sweat pants and then put on the sweets. I'm never cold.
