Inconsiderate neighbors!

Despite the thread title, I just got back from a great weekend at the lake. Really! Just look at some of the pics:

The only damper (besides the 95-degree heat & humidity) was my neighbor who insisted on firing up FIVE!!!!! 100-watt work lights from sunset at 7:30p until quiet hour at 10:00pm. The guy had an LED strip above his door, too. The first night, I though he was just using them to get backed in and setup. But I was dumbfounded the second night when he burned them for no good reason! That's my campfire at the bottom left

Maybe he has a visual impairment and needs the extra light after sunset to help him get around?

I have never had inconsiderate neighbors and do you know why? I camp alone as far away as possible from everyone else in the back country.

That is certainly a possibility. More likely this person likes a well-lit campsite. The park owner should have him shut it off. The lights on the RV should be more that adequate. Most folks are pretty nice, but some are real problem children who only think of themselves.

We were at a campground a few weeks ago and a group played their music all day, even when they were not present. I don't think they will be a problem next year as when I got up the next morning, there were five people sitting in chairs,,,,,,on the roof. After that roof leaks all winter, they probably won't be there next year. Karma's really a pain isn't it!!

They had a toy hauler so I'm guessing a ladder on the backside from me. Amazing that some people have so little respect for others camping there or their equipment. I wondered at the time if they had borrowed the trailer from someone.

There are toy haulers that do have roof top decks. This could possibly have been one of them.

Could have been but this group was so clueless that I doubt they would have known or even cared!! Other stuff going on but I don't want to get started. I just wish that people would be respectful of others so everyone can enjoy their time camping!!

I try to be a good neighbor at crowded cgs and expect others to do the same. But I also know that if it is the weekend there will more than likely be several unretired groups who are there to get the most of their limited time. So I don't expect it to be quiet and peaceful until the posted quiet hours. I know they will be gone in a day or two so I try to be tolerant. We also love to attend NASCAR events where it is a week long 24 hour a day party. So most cg antics don't phase us. We enjoy people and usually have talked to everyone around us which goes along way in mutual respect. And if there is a party in the area, we are usually invited. When we want peace and quiet we choose our camping area accordingly (the backwoods boondocks).

We recently camped at Silver Strand beach in San Diego, CA. It's a state beach campground parking lot style setup with water and elect hookups. The toy hauler next door neighbor had a football game blaring at high volume inside his rig the first day. We were sitting outside in our chairs and it was just awful. Same neighbor played very loud heavy metal music the next night until about 11:00 pm. It was creepy and miserable. I didn't complain because I didn't want something mysteriously happening to our motorhome.

A couple months ago, went to a state park, middle of nowhere prairie land, for several nights of get-away. One of the neighboring sites, needed to set up a couple floodlights so ... they could come home to light. The didn't return until the wee hours, a couple hours after midnight. It was quite apparent, they had gone off to the casino ...

One month forward, same campground. This time, a group occupied several sites, bunch of tents, and a couple all night lights. THIS Group was providing a camping opportunity to some differently-abled teens / young adults, who probably would never get out like that otherwise. In our opinion, an absolutely heroic effort. They were back and forth from the park bath house at all hours, and I'm sure their light made it SO much easier for them. God Bless !!!

In the state / county etc. parks there are usually "host campers" along with the normal rangers, who could probably help with actual cases of rude behaviour.

I guess I'm in the minority, I dont see this as rude at all.

They wanted their area lit up, for whatever reason, so they lit it up. They did not break any rules. They even had the lights turned off during "quiet time".
I'm willing to bet they didnt judge you for the way you camped, why should you judge them?

Somethings are annoying, yes. But if they aren't breaking a rule, or being unsafe, then just go with the flow....

I would have probably walked over and said hello. Probably tried to get a free beer out of them and made some comment about their bright lights within a conversation.
If they were shining into your campsite (which it looks like they may have been) I would walk over and ask them to turn the lights a little or relocate them while explaining that the bright direct light was bothering me. I bet they would have done it without any issue.

Well, I see where you're coming from, but I guess for me it goes back to the concept of limited freedom: you're free to do whatever you want as long as you're not breaking the rules or infringing upon another's rights.

You're right. They weren't technically breaking any rules. And I didn't say anything to them because of it. But they were impeding my ability to enjoy the glorious night sky and the illusion of remoteness that most desire while camping.



That's why I viewed it as inconsiderate, because they didn't take into consideration that their excessive light might be hindering my enjoyment or imposing on their neighbors. Same as if someone were blasting their music at an excessive volume even during daylight hours. Why do I have to listen to your music and have my campsite lit up by your lights?

But again, I CAN understand your argument.

I agree with you. I was brought up to be considerate of others. You should think of your impact on others even if it's not against the rules. Other than quiet time you can do just about anything but should you. Most people come to the forest to enjoy a little of nature. should you do things that can easily be annoying to others just because it's not against the rules?

It used to be that campers were a breed apart from the average narcissist. They had a "code of etiquette" that was simple and logical. They would "allow" you to enjoy nature and you would "allow" them as well.

I brought my children up with that same code but it seems that the camping world has been infected with narcissism and there may be no cure.

There was a campground that I visited as a child and they had posted on a bulletin board the do's and dont's of camping. They weren't rules but what you should expect of yourself and others.

There should be a permanent thread on camping etiquette that newcomers as well as old self centered campers can read and add to so that they'll be informed as to what "should" be their attitude towards other campers.

It could be that some have never thought what they do can be offending and this would make a great reference.

I think I'll start it.
