Insurance cost

In 1995 I bought a new Terry travel trailer, when I checked on insurance it was about what I paid just for liability on an old hot rod I had, about a $100 every 6 months, I kept insurance on it whole time I owned it for roughly same amount. Fast forward to this year, I bought a new Coachman Legacy and transfer insurance to it, just receive bill from Allstate $458 for 6 months, ( more than I pay for full coverage on my truck , it had it listed as a Coachman C, I called thinking I was being charged for a motorhome instead of a trailer but they said no, they’d put my serial number in and that’s what the title was. Is that a right price for a trailer? I know it’s around $30000 trailer but my truck has all the injury/damage to other vehicle included and still cheaper? That is around $900 a year for a trailer, I’ve paid about $250 a year last 25 years ( I know Trailer was older but even when it was new it was reasonable) I’m still thinking they’re charging for a class c. Is $900 a year about right? Thank you

Most of the campers I've had have been less than $100 a year to insure, including my current 2014 Prime Time Avenger which I bought last year. But the 2015 Keystone Bullet I owned from 2015 to 2018 was more than $600 a year. I was told that just like cars some RVs carry a higher risk for the insurer. The agent couldn't tell me why, but it was the only "light weight" trailer I've owned.

Thanks for the reply, I may need to call my agent again, I just talked to a girl in front, mine is more than my truck which has full coverage plus $100000, $100000 per person injury coverage for anyone I hit, it’s almost like I’m paying for all that coverage twice.

When I bought the Prime Time Avenger and the premium dropped below $100 again I asked them to double check that I hadn't been over paying on the Bullet and that was when they explained about the risk factor. Though they couldn't tell me what made it riskier to insure I can only assume that light weight trailers sustain more damage in an accident and are probably more likely to be totaled.

The Bullet was more to insure than my 2014 Silverado or my 2019 Colorado too.

I'm glad I read this. We have State Farm for everything. My husband has had that insurance for 30+ years so our rates for home and auto are generally good. BUT - we're paying $33 per month for our 2017 Rockwood Mini Lite we bought this year.


We do have full coverage with replacement value of about $21,000.00. Do you folks just have liability or full coverage?

My full coverage cost is comparable to yours. My State Farm guy said liability was not offered on my fifth wheel.

Not sure what I’m being charged for but it’s $458 twice a yr. , still don’t know why it says Coachman C , it’s been @$225 a yr for last 25 years, same company, same driving record..

I just got my bill from Progressive. My rate went up just over $100.00 from last year. Called to inquire why. Well, I had forgotten that speeding ticket last July ! They found it and acted accordingly. They use a 35 month driving history. As we talked they revealed they also use your credit rating (FICO) to determine your insurance rate. Mine is over 800 so that did not affect me. It was the speeding ticket. My Tracer is covered for full replacement as well as vacation rental if not able to use mine away from home and personal effects coverage beyond that. Hated that the rate went up but ol lead foot here was warned by the DW just before the county boy topped the hill and blue lighted me !

Why don't you call USAA directly and bypass Progressive. I did last month and by adding the TT, my monthly USAA Insurance premium went down.

USAA Insurance on the TT only covers it while it is in storage/on the property. If you have your TV insured through USAA, the TT is automatically covered while it is in tow.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have everything else with USAA including my 5th wheel. May check on it when I have time to sit on hold waiting for an Insurance talker.

My 2017 2109S Mini Lite is insured through Progressive RV insurance and it's $214 per year. It's the only vehicle I have insured through them so there isn't any multi policy discount. I think the policy is actually from a company called Brown and Brown or something like that even though I got it from Progressive, manage the policy online, and pay through the Progressive website. I think it's only gone up about $8 since I first got the insurance in spring of 2016.


I have the standard full coverage with full replacement cost, vacation insurance, Contents, etc.



My regular Truck insurance is through USAA and would have liked to go through them, but if I remember correctly when we bought the camper, I checked and they didn't insure campers in my state or something like that. I should check again for next year, because I really like USAA.

This is for 6 months , my agent is telling me the collision covers trailer for up to $28000 “ only” if it’s hitched to truck. Is everybody sure your trailers are covered at campsite or in storage? Hard for me to believe ALLSTATE would be 4 times higher than everyone else?

The cost thru Progressive for our Silverback 33IK is a little over $600 a year. Based on how we use it and what is covered I think it is right as it should be.

We could add liability, but only if we had an annual site at a park.

Talk to them on the phone now. You can always cancel the Progressive policy and they will prorate the premium and give you a refund. Well worth it. I got stuck with Progressive because I didn't know any better. The next year I got USAA to insure it and ut was WAY cheaper.
